Postseason wrestling sites released

DES MOINES - The Iowa High School Athletic Association has already decided where teams and individuals will try to advance to the state wrestling tournament Feb. 18-20 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Class 2A and 1A sectional tournaments will occur on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 16 sites in each class. The regional dual tournaments for 1A and 2A will be Tuesday, Feb. 9. The Class 3A regional team duals will be Wednesday, Feb. 10.

The district tournaments for all classes will be Saturday, Feb. 13.

State dual team tournament will be Feb. 17.

Area Class 2A teams are split with Fairfield and Mid-Prairie going to the sectional at Albia while Mt. Pleasant, Washington and Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union compete at the Davenport Assumption sectional.

Five Class 1A Union area schools - Cardinal, New London, Pekin, Sigourney-Keota, Van Buren County - will go to the sectional in Sigourney, then the district in Pleasantville a week later.

The remaining two Union schools are Highland and WACO and they will go to Mediapolis Feb. 6 then to the district in Wapello Feb. 13.

Last year, 16 Union area wrestlers advanced to the state tournament by finishing first or second at district meets. Mt. Pleasant, Washington and Mid-Prairie advanced one wrestler each. New London sent six wrestlers to state while WACO sent three. Highland and Sigourney-Keota had two apiece while Pekin sent one.

The Association attempts to place qualifying wrestlers from the same district on opposite sides of a bracket.

This would have been the third year of seeding the top eight qualifiers, then using a random draw to place the ninth through 16th seeds. A random draw for the entire bracket was the system used prior to the 2019 state tournament. This year, all 16 qualifiers will be seeded.
