Preseason volleyball rankings released

The preseason volleyball rankings were released Monday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

In Class 4A, Southeast Conference member Fairfield is recognized at No. 13.

The Trojans were 31-6 last season and lost to Cedar Rapids Xavier one game short of state. Xavier is ranked second in this preseason poll.

In Class 3A, River Valley Conference member West Liberty is slotted at No. 5. RVC member Wilton is No. 7 in the 2A poll.

Southeast Iowa Super Conference member Van Buren is ranked as the fifth-best team in Class 2A. Van Buren was 30-4 last year but lost to Durant in the postseason.

Van Buren coach Matt Zietler isn't sure about the ranking.

'I don't know (if we are the fifth-best team). I really don't,” he said. 'On the right day, we are. On the right day, you get us playing at full potential with everyone hitting and digging and all that other stuff you're supposed to do, we're pretty tough. But you can see when it goes south, heads start to go down and we get pretty unraveled at times, including the coach.”

SEISC member Mediapolis is also ranked in 2A at No. 10. Van Buren defeated Mediapolis twice last season, but both matches went to a deciding set.

Perennial power and SEISC member Holy Trinity was ranked No. 6 in Class 1A.
