Last week's cross-country rankings by the Iowa Track and Field Coaches Association surprised fans locally when the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks dropped to No. 2 in the Class 2A team girls Top-15. Even more of a surprise was the fact Danielle Hostetler was not in the Top-30 individual rankings after being No. 1 in five of the previous polls.
With the rankings Tuesday's release of individuals and Wednesday's teams, all is back as it seemingly should be in Week 6.
The poll committee only will use results of Sunday through Saturday meets each week. Often there are injuries or not all results are reported on time so the committee can not evaluate a head-to-head victory until the following poll. Hostetler had a hip injury that kept her out of a race and Mid-Prairie's schedule was devoid of a meet for a week. The combination contributed to the loss of the ranking for her and the drop of the team.
Things are back to the standard Mid-Prairie has established with Hostetler all the way back at No. 1, along with her team.
Addison Parrott of Danville-New London made a big move last week, climbing to second from No. 9 and stayed at No. 2 this week.
Williamsburg's Ruth Jennings was the new No. 1 last week in place of Hostetler, but is now third. Her Raider teammates were at Nos. 14, 21 and 22 and are Nos. 18, 19, and 23 this week.
Mid-Prairie's Jaden Yoder and Sydney Yoder dropped from second and third in Week 4 to third and fourth last week. Sydney Yoder stayed in fourth this week but Jaden is now sixth, although she finished ahead of her twin sister in Monday's race at Hillcrest. Another Golden Hawk, Mitzi Evans, entered the rankings at No. 11. She has been ranked in the past, and was 16th in Week 1.
Washington junior Lance Sobaski was ranked for the first time last week with a place at No. 27 in Class 3A and is at No. 28 this week.
In Class 2A boys, Danville-New London's Ty Carr rose from No. 8 to No. 6 and teammate Alexander Julian is right behind at No. 7, up from 13. Oliver Sowell, who has been in and out of the Top 30, returned at No. 29.
Mid-Prairie's Thaddeus Shelter remained at No. 10 for the second week but teammate Jamison Stutzman climbed to 15 from 18 and Chandler Hershberger dropped a spot to 19.
Brady Millikin of Pekin was at No. 7 in Class 1A for the third consecutive week.
Pekin's Lauren Steigleder continued her climb as she was ranked at No. 30 in Week 4, No. 24 in Week 5 and is now at No. 12 in Week 6. Lily Fariss rose from No. 22 to 11, then 13 and is at 18 this week. Lauren Dersheid has reentered at No. 28.
In Wednesday's release of the team rankings, Pekin maintained its position in both the girls (second for the fifth week) and boys (fifth) Class 1A team ratings.
Mid-Prairie stayed in fifth while the Danville-New London boys team remained atop the Class 2A list, The D-NL girls entered at No. 13 last week and maintain that spot.
For the fifth consecutive week, Columbus is hanging in at the edge of the Class 1A boys Top-15 as a team to watch and has moved up to the first listing after being listed second since Week 2.
