Two Union area teams entered the week in the Cedar Rapids Gazette’s Top-10 polls, and two area teams remain.
Both Sigourney-Keota and WACO won on Friday. Both the Cobras and Warriors stayed unbeaten, and both appeared in the Week 6 poll.
With two games left for the Cobras and one for the Warriors, both Sigourney-Keota and WACO are in control in their respective districts.
Sigourney-Keota is coming off a season-high in points in a 50-26 win over Cardinal on Friday night. The Cobras have knocked off two-straight previously unbeaten squads and has games remaining against Central Decatur (4-2) and Van Buren County (2-4).
Sigourney-Keota stayed at No. 5 in the poll, earning 37 votes in Class 1A.
WACO rolled through Lone Tree 55-22 last week. A relatively chaotic 8-Player week led to the Warriors jumping from No. 10 to the No. 8 spot in the rankings, getting 18 votes.
Sigourney-Keota’s Cade Molyneux is first in 1A with 1,333 yards rushing, first in carries with 178, and third in rushing touchdowns with 16. Levi Crawford has the second longest punt return in 1A. Colten Clarahan has the longest field goal in 1A at 48 yards (fourth longest in the state) and is second in attempts and tied for first in successful field goals, hitting 4-of-5.
WACO, which plays rival Winfield-Mount Union on the road Friday, is third in Class 8-man in average points allowed with 11.1 a game. Simeon Reichenbach is first in the class and tied for third in the state with five made field goals in eight attempts. He is seventh in class with 922 yards rushing.
There was one change in the No. 1 rankings this week. Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Southeast Polk now co-occupy the No. 1 spot in Class 5A after previously top-ranked Ankeny lost on Friday.
