The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association released its All-State teams for the 2020-21 baseball season Tuesday, and the Union area had two representatives make the lists.
The area’s top two teams each had one player honored. In Class 2A, Mid-Prairie senior Aidan Rath was a first-teamer. In Class 1A, New London’s Tucker Gibbar found a spot on the third team.
Rath made the Class 2A team as an outfielder. The Golden Hawks’ star had a big year at the plate, hitting .494 with 12 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs and 40 RBIs.
After a competitive home run chase, Rath’s 12 homers were good enough for a tie for third in the state. He led all Class 2A batters.
Despite making the team as an outfielder, Rath did have a good year on the pitcher’s mound. He went 5-2 this season with a 1.60 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP and a team-leading 63 strikeouts.
In no surprise to anybody, Gibbar earned his spot on the Class 1A third team as a catcher.
The Tiger junior hit .427 this season, second best on the team. He led the team with nine doubles and 31 RBIs, and also finished with four triples, one of which coming in the state tournament.
Gibbar was fantastic behind the plate this season, finishing with a .994 fielding percentage. He threw five runners out trying to steal and had just one error all year.
Gibbar pitched nine innings for the Tigers this season. He went 1-0 with a 1.56 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP and 11 strikeouts.
Each All-State team had one player chosen as “captain.” The captain of the team must be a senior and must be on the first team.
Remsen, St. Mary’s pitcher Blaine Harpenau was picked as the Class 1A captain. In Class 2A, Van Meter outfielder Zach Pleggenkuhle earned the honors. The Class 3A captain was utility player Owen Puk of Marion, and the Class 4A honor went to Ankeny pitcher Brody Brecht.
