IOWA CITY — It was about as competitive as it could be at the Class 1A district golf meet in Iowa City on Monday, but when the dust settled and the score cards came in, an elite few earned a spot at the state golf meet.
One of those elite few was the first to do it for Hillcrest Academy since 1993.
Hillcrest’s Jace Rempel shot an 84 to finish second place out of 73 golfers in attendance, snatching one of the two individual tickets up for grabs.
"I was really working on my 100-yards and in shots,“ Rempel said. ”I think that really paid off.“
Rempel shot a 41 on the front nine and a 43 on the back nine. The only better score than his was Earlham’s Ryan Stiles, who shot an 83 to win the tournament. Rempel made state by five strokes, as the closest non-team qualifier shot 89.
After his round, Rempel and his teammates gathered around to wait on the final results.
“We knew it was going to be close,” said Hillcrest head coach Phil Schintler. “He truly deserves it though, so it was worth the wait.”
As a team, Hillcrest took fifth overall, with a 381. Luke Schrock scored a 91. Liam Schrock finished at 93. Josiah Beachy ended the day at 113, and Alex Niemeyer finished at 122.
Keota came oh so close to getting in as a team. The Eagles were right in the mix, shooting a 374, but it was only good enough for fourth place.
Keota finished three strokes behind Wapello and Lynnville-Sully, and six strokes behind tournament champion English Valleys.
Sawyer Stout shot a 91 to lead the Eagles and tie for eighth place overall. Caden Sprouse finished at 93. Billie Kindred shot 94. Colten Clarahan finished at 98. Cole Kindred shot 107, and Evan Vittetoe ended the day at 111.
New London placed eighth as a team, shooting 416. Ethan Streeter and Weston Miller each shot 103 to lead the way.
Wyatt Miller and Coen Fitzpatrick each shot 105. Dawson Goetz finished at 117, and Mason Shelledy shot 121.
Highland shot 442 to finish in 11th. Chase Schultz paced the Huskies with a 106. Peyton Heggy and Colton Sypherd both finished at 109. Luke Miller shot 118. Kaige Vonnahme finished at 122, and Trevor McFarland shot 130.
Winfield-Mount Union had two individuals playing. Carter Loyd and Jake Edwarsds each shot 98.
Rempel and the rest of the Class 1A qualifiers will be at Ames Golf and Country Club for the meet on May 23 and 24.
“I'm looking forward to playing the course,” Rempel said. “Hopefully I shoot a solid score.”
