FORT MADISON - Hillcrest took its soccer team down to Fort Madison Saturday for a scrimmage against the much larger school.
Hillcrest had a run of two straight state appearances interrupted by the cancellation of last season due to the coronavirus.
'It was a good learning experience for the guys, especially for those playing in their first-ever high school match,” Hillcrest head coach Marcus Miller said. 'We learned that despite some of the good things we did, there is a lot that we have to work on and improve.”
Hillcrest had a record of 12-5 in 2019 and lost to the eventual third-place Sioux Center team in the first round. The 2018 team set a school record for most wins with a ledger of 18-2, which was the best in Class 1A. It lost the first game at state to Des Moines Christian, which finished second. Des Moines Christian lost to Iowa City Regina in the title game 2-1. Hillcrest defeated Regina 2-1 earlier that season.
'It also helped us as coaches as we work to try to figure out who plays best in which positions,” Miller said.
