FINDLAY, OHIO - Iowa Wesleyan College junior Zach Ray, from Springfield, Ill., has been named the Mid-States Football Association Midwest League's Defensive Player of the Week for football, as announced by the league Monday morning.
Ray was one of the key players in IWC?s 48-16 win over Waldorf College on Saturday. The junior linebacker finished with eight tackles (one solo, seven assisted), including 1-1/2 tackles for loss. He also had his first collegiate interception.
Ray made the move to outside linebacker after starting this season as a defensive back. He has played numerous positions since coming to Wesleyan in the fall of 2008. Ray redshirted his first year as a quarterback but moved to wide receiver the past two seasons before switching to the other side of the ball this year. He also has been a member of many of the Tiger special teams units.
In his first season on defense Ray has 19 tackles (11 solo, eight assisted). He also continues to play on the IWC punt kick and return teams.
Iowa Wesleyan will play again when they host Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mapleleaf Stadium.
