FORT DODGE — The Washington Demon cross-country team ended the 2024 season the way every school wants to, running together at the state meet.
The Demon boys finished seventh in the Class 3A meet, scoring 219 points. The Washington girls finished 12th, scoring 265.
“It was a great day for us,” said Demon head coach Stefanie Haworth. “The kids worked really hard. It was the perfect way to end our season.”
The Demon boys were led by a career-best time for Andrew Rees, who made his debut on the podium, finishing 13th in 16 minutes, 20.8 seconds.
“I was honestly not expecting this performance at all, but I'm super thankful for the opportunity,” Rees said. “It feels really good.”
Rees followed in the footsteps of older brother Micah, who has made the Top-15 twice. Rees passed four runners down the stretch to take 13th.
“I was praying as I was going down that hill,” Rees said. “It felt really good, but also horrible.”
Tyler Alderton was the second Demon across. Alderton finished his final run in Fort Dodge in 16:43.6, continuing the trend of Rees and Alderton anchoring the Demon boys.
“That makes a huge difference,” Haworth said. “If (Andrew) wouldn't have had Tyler with him all season, that wouldn't have happened.”
Sawyer Tschantz finished 41st, crossing in 16:59.2 to make it three Demons under 17 minutes. Ethan Hotchkiss took 104th. Parker Tschantz was 107th. Teag Miller finished 122nd, and Jace Sanders was 130th.
The top Demon girl was Iris Dahl, who couldn’t make it back to the podium but still led the team by crossing in 19:41.9, for 32nd.
Keendall Hinrichsen and Lauren Horak were 74th and 79th respectively for the Demon girls. Alyvia Anderson finished 94th. Quincy Griffis was 109th. Angeline Anderson took 120th, and Emma Horak was 123rd.
Mt. Pleasant’s Quintrie Lee showed out in her first high school state race. Lee, who made the state race by just one spot during qualifying, took 63rd, crossing the tape in 20:20.7.
Lee was the second Union area runner across for the Class 3A girls. She was the third SEC runner across, finishing behind just Dahl, and Avery Rump of Fort Madison, who crossed in 45th.
