ELDON ? The Cardinal football team was the latest victim of Iowa City Regina?s remarkable winning streak, falling to the Regals Friday by a score of 58-0 in Eldon.
The win was the 33rd straight for Regina, which racked up 303 yards on the ground and 163 through the air while holding the Comets to 26 yards total offense.
?They?re just better than us, and I don?t think there?s any shame in us saying that,? said Cardinal head coach Adam Hadenfelt. ?They?re just kind of the gold standard right now in high school football.?
The Regals certainly looked like the gold standard Friday and took a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter. They then pushed the Comets? offense into their own end zone and scored another touchdown on a 23-yard pass from Mark Ward to Matt Streb to go up 23-0.
Regina continued to build on its lead in the second quarter, tallying three more touchdowns to go up 44-0 at the intermission.
Meanwhile, Cardinal battled three-and-outs and poor field position the majority of the game.
?We had to be perfect to give ourselves a chance in the game and we weren?t,? Hadenfelt said. ?We struggled to make plays on the ball and struggled to keep possession on offense.?
Regina tacked on two more touchdowns in the second half. A 66-yard run by Jake Brinkman in the third quarter upped the lead to 51-0, and Justin Hunter scored the team?s final touchdown on an 18-yard run.
For the Comets, Nathan Yeager carried the ball six times for 23 yards and led the defense with 11 tackles and an interception. Showman was 2-for-6 passing for 10 yards, and Cody Carter caught one pass for 13. Brandon Potts had 10 tackles, and Carter and Urtado contributed with six apiece.
Hadenfelt said he hopes his players can learn from the loss and use it as motivation headed into their next district matchup.
?We hope we?re able to use [the loss] as an opportunity to grow,? Hadenfelt said. ?The only way this turns into a major thing is if we don?t learn from it and grow. We?ve got to get better and put the loss behind us and move on to next week.?
The Comets (3-2, 0-2) face another district frontrunner this Friday when they travel to Wilton.
