The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released its regional softball brackets this week, and all area teams know what their paths are to get to the state tournament in Fort Dodge next month.
The Union area’s lone Class 4A team, Mt. Pleasant, will go at it with Keokuk in an opening round game as part of the Region 6 tournament. That game is July 6 in Keokuk, with the winner playing at No. 5 Norwalk on July 8.
In Class 3A, most of the area teams play in Region 8, a bracket that sees No. 2 Davenport Assumption at the top.
Washington would likely earn a date with Assumption on July 8 if they can knock off Central Lee in the first round on July 6. On the other side of the bracket, Columbus/WACO travels to West Liberty and Fairfield travels to West Burlington.
Mid-Prairie is in Class 3A Region 6, playing at Center-Point Urbana. With a win, the Golden Hawks would likely play at No. 3 Mount Vernon.
In Class 2A, all three of Pekin, Cardinal and Van Buren County are in Region 7, the region which holds top-ranked Regina. Pekin needs to beat Tipton to get a date with the Regals in the second round. Cardinal hosts West Branch on the top half of the bracket, and Van Buren County will either face Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont or Pella Christian.
Those Class 2A games begin with Pekin’s game on the 30th. The next round is on July 5.
The area’s Class 1A teams join No. 8 Sigourney in Region 8. In the first round on June 30, New London travels to Holy Trinity Catholic, Winfield-Mount Union plays at Wapello, Highland hosts Lone Tree, Keota travels to Moravia and Hillcrest Academy goes to Tri-County.
