WASHINGTON — Washington junior Roman Roth has been red-hot on the golf course this month, and he showed no signs of stopping at the Class 3A district meet in Pella on Monday.
Roth dominated the meet at Bos Landed Golf Course, shooting a sizzling 72 to win the meet by five strokes over second place Johnathon Terpstra from Oskaloosa.
Roth’s win makes it three major victories in a row. He also finished first at the Southeast Conference meet in Fort Madison and the sectional meet at Washington.
As a team, the Demons came up just four strokes short from making a return trip to Ames.
Washington, which placed 10th at the state meet last season, finished the meet with a final stroke total of 328. That was four strokes worse than second-place Knoxville and six off meet winner Williamsburg.
“I'm sad the team didn't make it,” Roth said after the meet. “Overall, it was a pretty nice day. It means a lot to me, but I wish my team made it.”
Roth said he had a good day driving the ball, helped out by some good weather.
“I thought I was hitting the ball pretty straight and my putting was decent,” Roth said. “I maybe need a little work on it, but it wasn't bad.”
Washington’s Drew Conrad nearly made it as an individual. Conrad shot 80, which was just three strokes away from Terpstra for runner-up honors. A handful of golfers ended at 78 or 79.
Fellow freshman Rajan Roth wasn’t too far down the leaderboard. He ended the meet at 84. Luke Beenblossom was the fourth Demon scorer, with a 92.
Washington’s Teague Mayer shot 93 to finish one stroke back of the Demons’ top four. Isaac Vetter ended the day at 97.
Fairfield’s Max Weaton ended his high school golf career just a handful of shots out of the Top-5. Weaton shot an 83, which was not high enough to move on.
The area’s lone state qualifier will play at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames, the same course the team played at last season, for the Class 3A tournament. Roth finished in a tie for seventh last year.
“I have a little bit of experience on that course,” Roth said. “I don't mind it. It's pretty nice.”
The state tournament will be a two-day tournament, spanning from Monday, May 22 to Tuesday, May 23.
