AMES — The area’s golfers are now finished with one day of the state golf tournaments in Ames.
The top player for the area so far is the one Class 3A qualifier. Washington’s Roman Roth leads the field at a +1 73.
Roth went even on the front 9 and +1 on the back to take first place into Day 2 on Tuesday. He finished the day with five birdies and one eagle in an astounding round.
Roth went into Day 2 leading Williamsburg’s Crew Klingner and Clarke’s Austin Gonseth by two strokes.
In the Class 1A tournament, Hillcrest Academy went into Day 2 with a real shot at state glory. The Raves were tied for third place, shooting 337 to knot themselves up with Montezuma, and finish two strokes behind first place CAM and one behind second place Remsen St. Mary’s.
Ravens freshman Rowan Miller shot an 81 to lead the way for the Ravens. That had him tied in 12th place. Jace Remel shot 84. Luke Schrock finished at 85. Seth Ours shot 87. Liam Schrock ended at 88, and Josiah Beachy shot 96.
New London’s Mason Shelledy shot 86 on Day 1. He came into Tuesday tied for 30th.
As of press time, both the Class 1A and Class 3A golf meets were still in Day 2. A full report will be in Thursday’s edition of The Union.
