WASHINGTON — Washington soccer standout Greta Rothe made her college selection official on Wednesday morning, signing to play for Wartburg College.
Rothe signed her letter of intent while surrounded by her family and coaches. Rothe says that she chose the Knights because of the family characteristic that surrounds the school and team.
“The team and family aspect,” Rothe said “It’s just an amazing team. Ever since I went there, the values that the coach set were absolutely amazing and I loved how I felt there. I can see myself there at the college in general, but also on the team. That was the biggest aspect, just having values lined up. Every value lined up.”
Rothe has been an integral facilitator for the Washington girls soccer team for four years now.
As a freshman, Rothe score 13 goals along with three assists and shes only gotten better. After missing out on her sophomore year due to COVID-19, Rothe dropped in 16 goals last year and four assist.
In her senior season this year, Rothe has amassed 20 goals and two assists.
Last season Rothe was recognized for her stellar play by receiving the highest Southeast Conference honor, All-SEC Player of the Year.
Rothe says that now that she’s made her decision pressure has been let off her shoulders.
“Once I finally figured out, it was a big pressure off,” she said. “I feel like you spent a lot of your high school seasons and club seasons playing to see where your going to go play in college. You had coaches watching. It was a lot of pressure. It kind of stressed me out. Having it figured out is so nice and just focusing on the path ahead now.”
Wartburg has a pretty darn good soccer program in its own right.
This past season, the Knights put together a 15-4-1 overall record, with a 7-1 conference record. The Knights lost in the American Rivers Conference Tournament Championship game, but earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament regardless.
Rothe says that the one thing she is going to take away from living in Washington is the sense of family and community support.
“I feel like since this is also a smaller school, it’s just so much more of a community,” she said. “That is an aspect I love about living in a small town and living in Washington. It’s always felt like that. That’s the biggest thing I’m going to take away, that sense of community and bringing that to Wartburg and the people I’m around. It’s a family.”
