KEOKUK — It wasn't a fun night for the Washington basketball teams on Friday night, as the Demons took a road trip to Keokuk to try and knock off the Chiefs.
Instead, Keokuk took control early of both games and ran away with a doubleheader sweep.
The Chiefs used a strong start to the girls' game to knock off the Washington ladies 63-44. It was all Keokuk in the boys' game, as the Chiefs walked out 71-35 winners.
The girls' game was ultracompetitive for the final three quarters, but the Demons just couldn't get their legs under them in the first few minutes. Keokuk rushed out to a 21-5 lead after the first horn.
"It is what it is, I guess," said Washington head coach Shannon Rugg. "From the second quarter on, we probably pretty close to outplayed them. The ball just didn't go in the hole."
Washington had the lead cut to 13 in the second quarter, but went down 33-18 at halftime. The Demons flirted with getting the game to single digits in the second half, but they could never do it, trailing 44-26 after three and losing the fourth quarter 19-18.
Despite the loss, Adalyn Long had a nice night, putting up 16 points. Reagan Miller had six. Lauren Hinrichsen scored five. Sarah Berdo put up four. Oaklee Sobaski and Kendall Hinrichsen scored three apiece, and both Lyric Wright and Jaedyn Moore scored two.
The loss for the Washington girls dropped the team to 4-10 overall and 2-4 in the Southeast Conference. SEC title hopes seem slim, but Coach Rugg says there's still a lot to play for.
"We're still watching those conference standings," Rugg said. "We can still play spoiler."
The Demon boys went into the game in a five-way tie for first place in the conference, but the red-hot Chiefs proved to much from the drop.
Keokuk rushed out to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter lead. The Chiefs led 37-14 at halftime and 57-25 after three quarters.
The only Demon that could get anything going early on was Nic Stone, who finished the night with 12 points. Logan McDole put up 10 points. Seth Shepard and Kael Williams scored four each, and Conner Leyden finished with two.
The Demon boys are now 5-7 overall. Washington is 3-3 in SEC play, still just one game behind the leaders.
