KEOSAUQUA — The last of the Union area’s Class 2A volleyball teams went down on Wednesday night, as Van Buren County was ousted in three sets against Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division rival West Burlington in three sets.
The Falcons controlled each set, running past the Warriors 25-15, 25-27 and 25-13.
It was the fourth time the two teams had met up this season. VBC won the first two showdowns before West Burlington took the next pair of matches.
“I told the girls in the locker room, it’s hard to beat a team four times,” said Van Buren County head coach Selena Sayre. “West Burlington definitely came with the drive and the momentum that we had, but they capitalized on when they needed to.”
Ashlynn Huff had 13 kills to lead the Warriors in the loss. Marlee Mertens finished with eight. Sophia Jirak dished out 18 assists, and also coled in digs, picking up 14. Lexie Wiley also finished with 14 digs.
While that was going on, Winfield-Mt. Union was eliminated from the Class 1A tournament, falling in three sets to top-seeded Holy Trinity Catholic. The Crusaders took the Wolves out in the Class 1A Region 2 quarterfinals, winning 25-11, 25-15, 25-6.
Elsewhere, in Class 1A Region 3, Cedar Ridge Christian eliminated Keota 25-11, 25-6, 25-12.
