Saturday softball: Fairfield, Cardinal, Columbus each win a pair

A handful of Union coverage area softball teams were in action over the weekend. Those teams saw a lot of success in their perspective matchups.
Fairfield 4, Van Meter 2
The Trojans and Bulldogs were scoreless for three innings before a three run innings by the Trojans. Fairfield added one in the fifth to pull out the victory in Oskaloosa.
Peyton McCabe led Fairfield with two hits. Coty Engle, Delaney Bree, Jenna Norris, Emersyn Manley and Brynley Allison all had hits as well. Norris and Allison each had RBIs.
Engle took the victory in the circle.
Fairfield 9, West Burlington 5
Fairfield scored all nine runs within the first three innings against West Burlington.
After three, the Trojans led 9-2. The Falcons scored three in the fourth, but it wouldn’t be enough to best Fairfield.
Engle, Hannah Simpson and Danielle Breen all notched a pair of hits. Simpson also had three RBIs and Engle two. Norris, Manley and Allison each had one hit. Norris also had an RBI as well. Delaney Breen finished with two RBIs and Savannah Hollander had one.
Delaney Breen and Laney Norris pitched for Fairfield.
Cardinal 12, Chariton 0
The Comets dominated on both sides of the field at the Cardinal Invitational on Saturday.
Cardinal 12, Pekin 2
Cardinal got its second win of the tournament with the victory over Pekin.
The Comets gave up just two hits in the win.
Kendyl Noel and Anna Hadley each had a hit for the Panthers in the loss.
Abby Guise threw for Pekin in the game.
Columbus 15, Danville 4
The Wildcats scored 11 in three innings and two each in the fourth and fifth to down Danville over the weekend.
Jocelyn Fulton led Columbus with four hits and an RBI in the win. Kennedy Woepking finished with three hits. Sera Vela and Lily Coil both had two hits, with Coil picking up two RBIs and Vela one. Victoria Howell, Lecet Quiroz and Frannie Sosa each had one hit. Howell also had an RBI.
Coil an Woepking pitched to a win for Columbus.
Columbus 5, English Valleys 1
Columbus continued to roll on Saturday with a win over English Valleys.
Coil and Fulton both had two hits in the victory. Fulton also had a game high three RBIs. Vela, Howell and Woepking all had one hit.
Coil also took the win from the circle.
Chariton 11, Pekin 1
Pekin struggled against Chariton. The Chargers scored all 11 in the first three innings. The Panthers got one back in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough.
Quinnlyn Baker, Clarie Roth, Brooke Miller and Myah Bainbridge each had a hit. Bainbridge had the sole RBI.
Miller took the loss in the circle.
Hillcrest Academy 13, English Valleys 3
The Ravens scored eight runs in the first two innings against the Bears. In the fourth they added four and one in the fifth.
Danville’s three runs came between the first and third innings.
Malia Yoder went 5-5 in the game for Hillcrest. Kylee Statler, Leah Bontrager and Grace Miller each had two hits. Statler also finished with four RBIs, Miller had three and Bontrager one. Norah Yoder, Evelyn Gerber, Esther Hughes and Adrianne Blauvelt each had one. Yoder, Hughes, and Delaney Shaw all ended with an RBI as well.
Malia Yoder and Bontrager pitched in the win.
English Valleys 6, Hillcrest Academy 5
Hillcrest led 5-1 after two innings, but the Bears won the scoring battle the rest of the way out, 5-0.
Hughes and Miller both had two hits and two RBIs in the loss. Norah Yoder, Malia Yoder, Shaw and Lydia Beachy each had one hit. Shaw and Malia Yoder also had an RBI.
Bontrager pitched for the Ravens.
