Saturday softball: Washington, Highland play in road tourneys

Washington and Highland traveled to play in weekend tournaments on Saturday, and both were able to pick up a win. The Demons and Huskies each scooped up one victory.
Washington knocked the ball around all game long in their Jesup Tournament opener against North Fayette Valley. The Demons beat up on the Tigerhawks 15-3 to take the game in four innings. Washington fell 15-2 in the next round, against Dubuque Hempstead.
Washington’s Isabella Salazar went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the opener. Leighton Salazar was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Ava Turner and Ela Greiner each knocked in two, and Kendall Hinrichsen had two hits.
Isabella Salazar picked up the win in the circle for Washington against North Fayette Valley. The freshman gave up three earned runs and struck out five batters to earn the win.
Greiner was 1-for-2 with an RBI against Dubuque Hempstead. Leighton Salazar was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
In Highland’s first game at Calamus-Wheatland on Saturday, the Huskies threatened to upset No. 5 (2A) Northeast before falling 4-2. They took out their frustrations in their next game by blasting Clinton 16-0.
Highland’s Jessica Kraus was 2-for-3 with two RBIs against Northeast. Grace Batchellor was in the circle and gave up four runs (Three earned) while striking out four hitters over seven innings.
Highland wasted no time in its second game of the day, plating nine in the first inning against Clinton. Mackinze Hora and Payton Brun each had two RBIs in the opening frame.
