Saturday wrestling: Highland hosts home tourney

The area’s boys wrestling teams traveled to three tournaments on Saturday. Highland hosted a handful of area schools. A pair of squads went to Ottumwa and a pair went to North Mahaska.
GARY CURTIS INVITATIONAL AT HIGHLAND
Seven area schools met up in Riverside for the Gary Curtis Invitational. Mid-Prairie secured fifth place for the top area team present. New London took seventh. Washington was eighth. WACO finished ninth. Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union was 12th. Highland was 14th and Mt. Pleasant took 14th.
New London had three winners on the day. Marcel Lopez took the 126-pound weight class, defeating Alburnett’s Blaine McGraw on a 25-10 technical fall in the final.
Dominic Lopez won the 152-pound bracket. He finished off Iowa City Regina’s Sam Aitchison in the championship match, beating him 25-10 on a technical fall.
Josh Glendening picked up a third win for New London. He won the championship over Iowa City Regina’s Christofor Waikel, pinning him in 1:16.
Washington won two weight classes on the day. Freshman Aaron Boone stayed unbeaten with a 5-4 decision against Wilton’s Brody Bisker in the 113-pound championship. Chase Greiner won the 160-pound title, beating Alburnett’s Reece Klostermann via pinfall in the title match.
Mid-Prairie had a pair of winners as well. At 195 pounds, Cael Garvey defeated New London’s Trent Wilkerson by pinfall in the first period. At 28 pounds, Gannon Callahan defeated Wilton’s Alexander Kauffman 13-6.
Columbus/WMU’s Lane Scorpil and WACO’s Jonah Clark both won their brackets. Scorpil was the champion at 120 pounds, downing Alburnett’s Preston Klostermann on a 15-6 major decision. Clark won the 220-pound bracket, finishing it off with a pin against Logan Wright of West Branch in the final.
OTTUMWA INVITATIONAL
Sigourney-Keota and Fairfield were both in Ottumwa for the Bulldogs’ home invitational. Sigourney-Keota finished second, and Fairfield took 10th.
Sigourney-Keota had two wins on the day. Aidan Schuster rolled through the 182-pound bracket, pinning Newton’s Wyatt Weter to earn the championship. Conner Reed won the 220-pound bracket, pinning Burlington’s Julian Perez-Hall in the final.
Fairfield didn’t have any wins on the day, but Cason Miller brought home a second. He nearly won the 132-pound bracket, but fell 5-4 to Ottumwa’s Daltin Doud.
NORTH MAHASKA INVITATIONAL
Pekin and Cardinal competed at the North Mahaska invite in New Sharon. Pekin was ninth and Cardinal finished 11th.
Pekin didn’t have any winners on the day. Gavyn Brown did finish second at 152 pounds, falling to Lynnville-Sully’s Maxwell Mintle in the championship.
Cardinal’s best finisher was Isaac Cox, at 285 pounds. He pinned Carter Smith of Baxter in just 40 seconds in the third place match.
