Dawsen and Drake Schluetter are twins bowling for the Washington Demons.
Wednesday was the season's first home meet and the two decided to bet on who would bowl the better games.
Drake had to pay off as the loser and Dawsen's prize of chicken wings helped the girls team take a victory over Sigourney at Lebowski's Rock and Bowl.
The Washington girls team won with a 2,101 total over the visitors' 1,844.
The Washington boys won 2,081-2,044 for their first victory of the year.
'Overall, I was very satisfied that we came out on top because it was a great battle,” Washington coach Chad Zear said. 'Unfortunately we are going to be down a bowler for the rest the year. We still have some boys that have a chance, a good opportunity to possibly make state. The girls did a fine job and hung in there. A couple performed very well today.”
Ethan Zieglowsky had the high game and series for the Demons with a 171-224-395.
'I wish I could have done way better, but I did all right considering the fact it was the first home meet,” he said. 'I think I had a little bit of nerves.”
He had seven strikes in a row in the first game.
'I am kind of mad now that I didn't do better,” Zieglowsky said. '(Tuesday) at Keokuk, I had six in a row to begin the game, but a 10 pin didn't fall over in the seventh frame and I let it bother me. I should not have let it bother me. It is important to keep your mind in it. You have to fight through adversity. Even when Keokuk didn't get a break they did not let it bother them. I need to remember that because I can't go down there and kick that 10 pin over when it doesn't fall. Although sometimes I wish I could do that.”
The Demons witnessed a Keokuk team knock down over 3,000 pins, but Zieglowsky had the high game of both teams with a 276.
There is a saying about iron sharpening iron and the battle between the twins had that effect.
'We had a bet and I won the bet,” Dawsen Schluetter said. 'He is supposed to buy me some wings after this. I think it made me bowl better. He has always been better than me, so I had to rub it in his face a little bit. My brother has been playing for a long time because he does league.”
Dawsen bowled a 147-167-314 while Drake had a 137-161-298.
'She got me twice, but we are competitive, so it was good,” Drake said. 'I know in the first game I told myself I wasn't going to let it happen, but she came back and got me, so I guess I did let it happen. I think it helped us out and it made her bowl better.”
Against Keokuk, Dawsen went 136-155-291 while Drake was 137-170-307.
'I feel I did pretty good because I got a lot of strikes and that does not happen all the time,” Dawsen said. 'Keokuk was a really good team, so we learned we had to keep our attitudes up. It helps that we came through today.”
The Schluetters are juniors and while Drake has played leaguer since he was younger, Dawsen just started in high school.
'I was kind of iffy about going out, but I went out my freshman year because when I went to the meeting, I liked the coach and I'm really glad I did,” she said.
Zear said things have a way of coming together.
'It was great to see Dawsen bowl so well. It wasn't originally planned to put them together, but it sure worked out that way. I like to have a strong bowler at the top of the lineup, so we can get a strong leadoff. She really did it. We had some struggles with some of the other bowlers, but it was the first home meet of the year, so it's to be expected.”
Other boys scores Wednesday were Riley Lambert 148-149-298, Liam Eldridge 81-129-210, Dacota Miller 99-109-208. Baker games were 136, 149, 148, 126 and 114.
At Keokuk Tuesday, the other boys scores were Zieglowsky 276-160-436, Lambert 202-191-393, Eldridge 119-99-218, and Miller 84-101-185. Baker games were 145, 157, 141, 172, 135.
