Schubert cuts loose for Trojan girls
OTTUMWA ? At Tuesday?s Don Newell Classic in Ottumwa, Fairfield?s Libbey Schubert asked whether she would get a mention on the Ledger sports page.
And just as she has done all season, she made it hard to leave her name out.
Schubert broke the one-minute mark for the first time in her career on her way to winning the 400-meter dash (59.90) and also helped two Trojan relays to runner-up finishes against top-notch 4A

OTTUMWA ? At Tuesday?s Don Newell Classic in Ottumwa, Fairfield?s Libbey Schubert asked whether she would get a mention on the Ledger sports page.
And just as she has done all season, she made it hard to leave her name out.
Schubert broke the one-minute mark for the first time in her career on her way to winning the 400-meter dash (59.90) and also helped two Trojan relays to runner-up finishes against top-notch 4A competition.
?That kind of performance in the 400 was going to come. It was only a matter of time,? said Fairfield head coach Ron Hunerdosse at the meet.
Schubert?s night helped Fairfield to 55 points and a fifth-place finish in the final team standings. The Trojans finished behind Iowa City West (165), Pekin (93), Burlington (85) and Ottumwa (68) while beating their 3A counterparts Oskaloosa (33) and Centerville (6).
Jessica Lamb gave all she had in hopes of marking up another win for the Trojans as she took the baton from Schubert to anchor the 800 Medley-relay. The relay, led off by Edna Jones and Kiersten Vaughan wound up less than a half second short of Pekin with a time of 1:55.62.
Freshman Sydney Howard joined the sprinting group of Jones, Vaughan and Schubert to give the Trojans a second-place finish in the 4x100 relay (52.28). Howard also took fourth in a stacked 100-meter dash field with a time of 13.15.
Katie Hammes placed fourth in both throwing events with a discus toss of 107-feet, eight-inches and shot put of 38-feet, 2.5-inches. Sidney Baumann picked up a double-place for Fairfield in the discus going 96-feet, one-inch.
Hammes is scheduled throw the shot for Fairfield at the Drake Relays at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. The 4x100 team is slated to run at 5:30 p.m. Friday while the rest of the Trojans will go to a meet at Mid-Prairie.
