BURLINGTON — The Washington girls were right there with Burlington after one quarter on Friday night.
However, a scoring purge through the second quarter culminated in a deficit the Demons couldn’t quite overcome despite a fourth quarter surge.
Burlington got the better of Washington 49-36 in the Southeast Conference head-to-head.
Washington was right there through and at the end of the first quarter.
Kendall Hinrichsen buried a three to cut the Burlington lead to one, 13-12, with just 12 seconds to go in the first period.
By the quarter’s end, the Demons trailed 14-12.
Things went awry through the next two frames. The Demons held Burlington to just 11 points in the second, but they failed to score a single point themselves.
Burlington led 25-12 at the half, but the game was still very much in reach for Washington.
To the Demons dismay, the shooting struggles continued. Between the second and third quarters, Washington connected on just one field goal, a spin move layin from Adalyn Long just 30 seconds into the third period.
From that point on, Washington didn’t score for over four minutes as the Burlington lead elevated to 36-14.
In the final three minutes of the third, the Demons scored five points all coming from the foul line.
Heading into the fourth, the Demons trailed 39-19.
Washington gave it all they had into the fourth, cutting the deficit down to 11 following a two from Oaklee Sobaski, but with just over two minutes to go time was not on the Demons’ side.
In all, Washington outscored Burlington 17-10 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough.
Long led Washington with 17 points, 15 of which came in the second half.
With the loss, Washington falls to 2-3 in SEC play and 3-9 on the season.
