WASHINGTON — Washington girls basketball showed plenty of promise against Fort Madison on Friday night in the two’s Southeast Conference matchup as the Demons and second seeded Bloodhounds were evenly matched through the second and third quarter.
However, the difference maker for the Demons was the first and final period of the evening as they were held to just four points in each. Fort Madison took the win 48-28.
Things didn’t start out great for Washington offensively.
The Demons scored just two points over five and a half minutes. Despite struggling to put the ball in the basket, Washington found itself down just eight, 10-2, through that span.
Taylor Bartholomew tallied the Demons second field goal of the first quarter at the 1:19 mark to make it a six points game, 10-4.
Fort Madison added three more to its total before the end of the quarter giving the Bloodhounds a 13-4 advantage after one.
Through the following two frames, the Demons were able to stick right with Fort Madison in head-to-head quarter scoring, but couldn’t gain an edge to get on top.
With just over 40 second remaining before the end of the half, Washington’s Kendall Hinrichsen buried a three to cut it to single digits, 23-14. Fort Madison ended up taking a 24-14 lead into the half.
Washington kept battling.
Within the first minute of the third period, the Demons cut it to six, 24-18, on a Bartholomew triple, but the scoring struggles hit once again.
The Demons were held scoreless for over five minutes and Fort Madison built its largest lead of the game, 32-18. Washington continued to fight though as it was able to get back within single digits, 33-24, heading into the fourth.
Washington did all they could to stay in it, but the fourth quarter brought more scoring woes. In the final frame, much like the first, the Demons scored just four points compared to Fort Madison’s 15.
Kendall Hinrichsen scored a team-high 10 points in the loss.
The Demons took on No. 1 (Class 4A) Clear Creek-Amana on Saturday as well. Washington was defeated in the matchup 80-17.
Washington drops to 8-11 with the pair of losses and is now 5-4 in SEC play.
