Southeast Conference basketball will be back in full swing this week with teams returning from winter break.
Mt. Pleasant, Fairfield and Washington will all be back in action with hopes of making a run at the SEC crown.
Mt. Pleasant basketball returns to the hardwood Tuesday night on the road against New London. The conference leading Panther boys (5-3) are currently 4-0 in the standings. They will look to make it five straight wins with a victory over the Tigers (2-6).
The Panther girls (1-9) have some work to do in the SEC, sitting at 0-4. After the matchup with the Tigers (1-8), Mt. Pleasant will battle with Fairfield in its first conference clash of the new year.
As for the Fairfield, the Trojans open 2024 on Tuesday as well. The Trojan girls (1-8) are 0-4 in the league standings and will play host to Van Buren County (1-6) on Tuesday ahead of their matchup with the Panthers on Friday.
The Trojan boys (1-8) will hit the road on the Tuesday to take on a tough Holy Trinity Catholic (6-3) squad. In Friday’s matchup with Mt. Pleasant, the Trojans will be searching for their first SEC victory of the season. They’re currently at the bottom of the standings at 0-4.
While Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield will battle on Tuesday, Washington opens its 2024 campaign against Burlington.
The Demon boys (4-5) hold the third spot in the SEC standings with a 2-2 record. Meanwhile, Burlington (1-7) is second to last in the standings at 1-3. A win for Washington would keep them right in the conversation for the league lead, but they also need losses from Mt. Pleasant and Keokuk.
On the girls’ side, the Demons have a big matchup with the Grayhounds on Friday. Washington (5-5, 2-2) is just one game back from Burlington (5-3, 3-1) in the standings. The two teams are currently three and four in the league.
The other two teams in the SEC in Keokuk and Fort Madison will take on one another on Tuesday Jan. 9. Keokuk (5-2, 3-1) is second in the SEC, while Fort Madison (3-5, 2-2) is fourth on the boys’ side.
As for the girls’ matchup, Keokuk (8-1, 4-0) who leads the conference will take on the second-place Bloodhounds (7-2, 3-1).
