In 17 days of the new year, the Southeast Conference still hasn’t seen a full slate of games all in one night. Weather willing, Friday will change that trend.
As long as mother nature allows it, Friday’s SEC games will kick off the second time around for the conference, as teams play in their first rematches of the new year.
Among those rematches is a doubleheader in Washington that sees the Fairfield Trojans looking for revenge after a Demon sweep in December.
When the teams met up in Dec. 8, Washington scored a 43-40 comeback win over Fairfield in the girls’ game. The Demon boys dominated 79-56.
The first time around it was Adalyn Long who led the way for the victorious Demons on the girls’ side. Long scored 12 points on the night and dished out five assists.
Savannah Hollander had quite the game in the loss. She went off for 17 points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists to lead the Trojans.
On the boys’ side, Roman Roth and Logan McDole shot the lights out, combining to go 15-for-22 from the field to score 19 points each for Washington. Fairfield’s Luke Konczal went for 15.
The Mt. Pleasant boys will head to Fort Madison to take on a Bloodhound team that has given the Panthers the best battles of the past two years.
The Panther boys have beaten the Bloodhounds four times in a row in the all-time series. Mt. Pleasant’s last three wins over Fort Madison have all come by two points or less, including a 52-50 victory earlier this season.
Last time around, Payton Hagans led Mt. Pleasant with 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Nate Stroud finished the game with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Things didn’t go so well for Mt. Pleasant on the girls’ side when the two schools met up on Dec. 8. The Panthers fell 38-12. Eight of those points came from Abby Carthey.
In the only other doubleheader of the night, Burlington will host Keokuk. The Chiefs are still currently tops in the girls’ standings, sitting at 4-0.
