It has been ?over 10 years of frustration? since Ron Hunerdosse has taken a Southeast Conference track championship home to Fairfield, but another chance will present itself Monday evening at Trojan Stadium.
His group of girls have shown improvement every week of the season and exemplified exactly that last Tuesday at the Brookhart Relays. On the same track they will run on tonight, the Trojans posted a convincing victory over Mount Pleasant ? their top challenger for the conference crown.
The well-rounded squad led by sprinter Libbey Schubert, who has an excellent chance to win gold in four events, also took care of conference opponents Washington and Keokuk setting up the clash with Mount Pleasant.
On the boys side, Mount Plesaant enters as the heavy favorite followed by Washington and Fairfield. The same group of Panther boys have already piled up a district championship in football and conference championships in wrestling and basketball this year.
If Fairfield was at full-strength they would certainly factor into the team race much more, but the sprinter-led team has fought though injuries and illness at key positions over the past week. As important as the conference meet is, Fairfield head coach Brian Dunlap?s focus remains having his team compete at their highest level when state meet appearances are on the line Friday at the district meet.
