The second day of the Class 4A girls? state golf tournament at the Ames Golf and Country Club, where Washington?s Megan Buitendorp and Sarah Waite were competing, was rained out on Wednesday. The 18-hole scores from Tuesday became the tournament?s final results.
Buitendorp, a junior, carded a 96 on Tuesday and tied for 24
th
place with Mt. Pleasant?s Courtney Mabeus. Waite, a sophomore, shot a 97 and tied for 26
th
place. There were 58 golfers in the 4A field.
Buitendorp and Waite played 14 or 15 holes on Wednesday, Washington head coach Leonard Kull said, before the round was called off.
?They played seven or eight holes, then lightning brought them in, and they sent them back out and they played four or five more holes,? Kull said. ?But then it got really bad, so they canceled it.?
Kull said that the Demon golfers were playing better than they did on Tuesday before Wednesday?s round was canceled.
?They were pleased the second day to be playing significantly better than the first day, so it was too bad,? Kull said. ?The first-day jitters were pretty much understandable.?
Kull said that the state tournament experience ? even a rain-shortened one ? will benefit Buitendorp and Waite next spring.
?We were saying this was the first meet for next year,? Kull said. ?I think they enjoyed themselves and were satisfied with the fact that they improved throughout the year.?
Buitendorp and Waite will both play one more high school tournament this year. Buitendorp will team up with senior Dillon de Perrot and Waite will partner with her older brother, junior Ryan Waite, for the Class 2A coed state tournament at Bos Landen Golf Club in Pella next Tuesday.
