BURLINGTON — Mt. Pleasant girls basketball saw its first halftime lead against Burlington dissipate in a hurry on Friday night in Johannsen Gymnasium as the Grayhounds scoring onslaught in the second half propelled them to a 62-38 victory over the Panthers.
Through the opening half, it was a tightly contested contest.
A Burlington three pointer kicked off the scoring, but Mt. Pleasant regained the lead off back-to-back layin’s from sophomore Abby Carthey off the break.
Alexa Fuller followed with a tough bucket down on the block to push the Panther’s lead to 6-3. The two squads traded blows and with just two minutes to go it was a 8-6 ballgame with the Panthers on top.
Mt. Pleasant kept up the solid defensive effort in the final two minutes and look like it was going to go into the second with the lead, but Burlington standout sophomore guard Mylee Stiefel knocked down a three at the buzzer to put the Grayhounds up 9-8.
Stiefel was the thorn in the side of the Panthers, particularly in the second half. She would finish with 30 on the night.
In the second period, Burlington held onto its advantage early. The Grayhounds led by as much as four on two separate occasions, with the final coming at 15-11.
Mt. Pleasant ended strong though.
A two from freshman Paityn Ensminger and a three from sophomore Myah Starr kick started and capped off what was a 9-2 run to the halftime buzzer. The Panthers held onto a 20-17 lead at the break.
Early in the third, the two teams traded shots tying twice at 22-22 and 31-31. However, from that point on it was all Burlington.
In the final two minutes of the third period, the Grayhounds scored 10 unanswered, capped off with yet another contested buzzer beating three by Stiefel.
After that run, the Grayhounds held 42-31 advantage heading into the fourth.
Things only got tougher for Mt. Pleasant. The Panthers went on to score just seven points in the final quarter, while the Grayhounds dropped in a whopping 27 points.
Abby Carthey led the Panthers with 12 points and five steals in the loss.
