Winfield-Mt. Union’s Jake Edwards named North division Player of the Year

Now that the Iowa High School boys basketball regional final rounds are complete, it marks the end of Southeast Iowa Super Conference’s basketball season.
The North Division was yet another battle at the top as it came down to a three team race, between Hillcrest Academy, WACO and Pekin.
This time around it was the Ravens taking the North Division title, with a record of 14-2. WACO followed in second, finishing 14-2 as well. Pekin ended 13-3, Winfield-Mt. Union 11-5, Louisa-Muscatine 8-8, Lone Tree, 5-11, Columbus 4-12, Wapello 2-14 and Highland 1-15.
The Ravens have four names between this year’s second and first teams. WACO and Pekin both have three. Winfield-Mt. Union has two, while Columbus and Highland each have one.
Winfield-Mt. Union earned an individual honor as well, with senior Jake Edwards being named North Division Player of the Year.
Hillcrest Academy head coach Dwight Gingerich, along with WACO first year coach Chayse Roth were named Co-Coaches of the Year.
For Hillcrest Acadmey, the top two leading scorers lead the way on the North’s first team list. That’s senior’s Seth Ours and Bryce Bailey.
Ours scored 14.2 points per game for the Ravens this year, while knocking down 49.1% of his field goals and firing at 37.1% from deep. He also shot an outstanding 83.9% from the foul line.
Bailey followed Ours scoring 12.1 points a game. Bailey shot 46.9% from the field.
Mason Bender and Rowan Miller were the Ravens second teamers. Bender scored 10.6 points a game, while pulling down a team best 7.2 rebounds a night. As for Miller, he notched 8.3 points a night and finished as the Ravens leading passer averaging 6.5 assists a game.
Kale Bailey and Lincoln Miller were the Ravens honorable mention selections.
WACO junior Christian Stacy earns a first team honor. Stacy led WACO averaging 19.3 points a night. He also finished with team highs in rebounds and steals, averaging 6.7 and 2.6 respectively.
Senior Isaac Rich and sophomore Isaac Egli are the Warriors representing on second team. Rich scored 8.4 points a game, while Egli averaged 6.3 with a team high 3.5 assists.
Holden Hughes and Clayton Miller were each named to honorable mention for the Warriors.
For Pekin, Cole Millikin is a first teamer. Millikin averaged 14.7 points a game for the Panthers. He was also Pekin’s top three point shooter, knocking down the long ball at a 39% clip.
Nolan Glick and Will Adam earn second team spots. Glick averaged a team second best 13.3 points, while shooting 56.3% from the field. Adam followed scoring 9.9 point a night with team highs in rebounds, 6.5 and steals, 3.3.
Pekin’s honorable mention selections are Henry Adam and Kasey Davis.
WMU’s Jake Edwards did a bit of everything for the Wolves. Along with averaging 18.3 points a night, Edwards also posted team highs in steals and assists, carding 5.3 assists and 4.9 steals a game. He also pulled down 4.7 rebounds.
Edwards’ 113 steals on the season ranks first in the entire state regardless of class.
Cooper Buffington is a second team selection for the Wolves. Buffington averaged 9.4 points a game in his return to the hardwood. He also led the Wolves averaging 8.3 rebounds, while shooting a stout 57.8% from the field.
Lane Genkinger and Max Edwards were the WMU honorable mentions.
For Columbus, Ellis Hills-Carrier is on first team. Hills-Carrier averaged 15.6 points an evening, while posting a team best in blocks at 1.2 a contest. He also pulled down 5.2 rebounds.
Juan Chairez and Ryan Coil were the Wildcats pair of honorable mentions.
Highland’s Bryce Hazelett earns a second team selection. Hazelett averaged 14 points a game for the Huskies, along with 2.7 rebounds and 1.5 steals.
Louis Horak and Logan McFarland were honorable mentions.
In the South, Union area squads Van Buren County and New London faced some tough competition. The pair finished in the bottom two spots in the league.
The Warriors ended 3-11, while the Tigers posted a record of 0-14 in conference action.
Van Buren County has two players on the list and New London one.
West Burlington once again took the South conference title with a 13-1 record. Notre Dame finished 11-3 and Holy Trinity 10-4. All three of those teams were ranked inside the top 10 at one point through the season.
Mediapolis and Central Lee both ended 8-6, while Danville closed 3-11.
Van Buren County’s Izaak Loeffler and Will Cocherell are both second team selections.
Loeffler averaged 19.9 points a game to lead the Warriors in the tough South division. He also averaged 4.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists.
Cocherell meanwhile, averaged 14.5 points and dished out an average four assists a game. He also shot 43.9% from the field.
The Warrior’s Lincoln Bainbridge and Kinnick Millard were honorable mentions.
For New London, London Franklin is on second team. Franklin averaged 14.4 points a game as the only Tiger in double figures. He also averaged 3.5 rebounds a night with 1.1 assists and, 1.9 steals and 1.1 blocks. He made 50.3% of his field goals as well.
The Tiger’s Brigham Porter and Tate Welcher get the honorable mention honor.
