Van Buren County names eight to all-conference, Highland seven

The Southeast Iowa Super Conference softball season has been closed for a little over a week now, which means it’s time to take a look at the 2024 SEISC All-Conference teams.
It was yet another competitive season. This time around, Louisa-Muscatine (16-0, 30-5) won the North title, while Central Lee (11-1, 25-11) took the South.
Highland (12-3, 19-9), Wapello (11-4, 20-14), Lone Tree (9-7, 12-14), Hillcrest Academy (8-7, 12-14), Columbus (6-10, 8-22), Winfield-Mt. Union (4-12, 6-20), Pekin (4-12, 4-22) and WACO (0-16, 0-17) rounded out the North.
In the South, West Burlington-Notre Dame (10-1, 25-9), Van Buren County (7-4, 14-11), Holy Trinity Catholic (4-7, 8-12), Danville (2-8, 5-21), Mediapolis (1-5, 10-11) and New London (1-10, 2-19).
The South Player of the Year was split between West Burlington/Notre Dame’s Logan Kelley and Central Lee’s Shanna Buford.
This season, the Union area is led by Highland with seven selections in North Division. Pekin and Columbus both finished with two picks.
Van Buren County also has seven selections in the South, followed by New London with two. The Warriors also had the coaches distinction as Randy Smith was named Coach of the Year.
First up for Van Buren County on first-team it’s junior Alicia Cumberland as a pitcher. Cumberland played in 17 games starting 14. She finished with a 10-6 overall record and a 2:05 earned runs average. Cumberland gave up 78 hits, 67 runs (27 earned) with 65 strikeouts.
The Warriors have a pair of players earning infield honors. Calli Kracht and Ashlynn Huff both earn a nod.
Kracht swung the bat pretty well this season to say the least, finishing with an average of .412. She finished with 33 hits, second most for VBC, with 18 RBIs. As for Huff, she closed the season with an outstanding .512 batting average. Huff led the Warriors in hits with 41, while also post 13 RBIs. She was stellar in the field as well, finishing with a fielding percentage of .949.
Ivy Davison finds herself on the first-team list as an outfielder. Davison batted .286 on the year with 20 hits and 20 RBIs.
Addison Brauns (pitcher), Rylee Caviness (catcher), Kiley Roen (infield) and Lexie Wiley (utility) were all second-team picks.
The Warriors pair of honorable mentions were Kayley Snowgren and Lexee Fritz.
One New London selection came in the form of senior Sophie Malott as a second-team infielder. Malott finished with an average of .167 at the plate, while leading the Tigers in RBIs with 11. In the field, Malott ended with a fielding percentage of .833.
The Tiger’s Lillie Gallup was a second-team pick as a catcher. Gallup hit .200 on the season and behind the plate Gallup threw out 10 total runners.
Morgan Jones and Megan Lee were the Tigers two honorable mentions.
In the North, Highland’s Grace Prybil earned a pitcher first-team honor. Pybil was one of the top pitchers in the area, finishing with a 15-4 record. She gave up just 78 hits, 29 runs (20 earned) with 103 strikeouts. She posted an ERA of 1.29, while holding opposing batters to a .195 batting average.
For Sarah Burton it has become a norm to be on the first-team list as an infielder. The Huskies senior batted .438 with 39 hit, a team best, with 16 RBIs. Burton also finished with 35 stolen bases.
Payton Brun joins Burton as an infield first teamer. Brun led Highland with an .458 batting average. She finished with 33 hits and 29 RBIs, which was a team best. Brun also had an outstanding .988 fielding percentage.
Mackenzie Davis is a first-team selection in the outfield. Davis swung the bat with an average of .278. Davis posted 22 hits and 18 RBIs, second most for Highland.
Rounding out the Huskies on first-team is Madison Beeson as a utility. Beeson had a .309 batting average this year, along with 21 hits and eight RBIs. Beeson had a 178 total chances in the field this season with just one error. Her fielding percentage sits at .994.
Lilly Barre and Mayia Singbeil are the two Highland second-team picks.
Kamryn Fink and Coutney Chalupa were each named to honorable mention.
For Pekin, Carlie Gambell is a first-team catcher. Cambell ended with an average of .288. Behind the plate, Gambell threw out 12 runners. She also had a fielding percentage of .944.
Myah Bainbridge was the Panthers other first-team selection as an infielder. Bainbridge led Pekin in almost every hitting category. She finished with an average of .552 with 37 hits and 32 RBIs. She also had two home runs.
Addison Smith and Alex Parsons were the Panthers honorable mention picks.
Hillcrest Academy’s lone first-team selection came in the form of Malia Yoder at utility. Yoder finished with a batting average of .571, leading the Ravens in hits and RBIs with 44 and 33 respectively.
Delaney Shaw was the Ravens lone second-team honoree, while Claire Withrow and Morgyn Nafziger were honorable mentions.
Winfield-Mt. Union’s Makiah Lower (pitcher) and Josie Nelson (outfield) were both second teamers.
Lower hit .513 for the Wolves in 2024. She finished with 33 hits and 19 RBIs, both of which were team highs. As the Wolves’s ace, Lower also notched 80 strikeouts.
Nelson batted .236 with 13 hits and seven RBIs. Nelson led the Wolves with 21 stolen bases as well.
Quin Smith and Katie Miller were WMU’s honorable mention selections.
Finally, Columbus had just one second-team all-conference pick. That lone player is Ellie Sanders who was an infield pick.
Sanders ended with an average of .461, while leading the Wildcats in hits with 41. She also posted 13 RBIs.
Kennedy Woepking and Lily Coil both finished as honorable mentions.
