DES MOINES — When it comes to scoring at the state track and field meet, sometimes it’s the usual suspects that get the job done.
For both Columbus and Mid-Prairie over state track and field weekend, familiar faces led the way.
Columbus scored 15 points on the weekend, all on the boys’ side. The Wildcats relied heavily on the sprints, as both the 4X100 team and the shuttle hurdle team made the finals.
The 4X100 squad of Juan Chairez, Riley Kaalberg, Lamar Ceant and Kaden Amigon flew in both the preliminaries and the finals, qualifying second after coming in as underdogs and finishing the final race in 43.30 seconds, to bring home the gold medal.
“We ran 44s all season long, and then in the prelims we came out and ran mid 43s,” said Amigon, who ran his last high school race in the 4X100 finals. “It's just random. It's like, 'where was that all season?'”
The Wildcats’ shuttle hurdle team of Johnathan Miranda, Kaalberg, Alexander Rees and Ceant qualified fourth, but took eighth in the finals, running a 1:04.31.
The Wildcats scored eight points in the 4X100 and one in the shuttle hurdle. Senior Russel Coil added six with a third-place finish in the shot put.
Coil launched his second shot put throw 51 feet, 10.25 inches. That was his best throw of the day.
Rees qualified seventh in the 110-meter high hurdles, but couldn’t finish the final due to injury.
Mid-Prairie rallied on the final day of state to place Top-10 in the girls’ standings. The Golden Hawks scored 23 points, thanks in large part to a pair of Top-6 finishes by senior Danielle Hostetler.
Hostetler, a staple at the state track meet for the last four years, took fourth in the 1500-meter run, crossing in 4:48.95. She took sixth in the 3000, finishing in 10:39.44.
“I'm so thankful and blessed,” said Hostetler, who ran both races with senior teammate Abby Fleming. “I've been able to run 16 races at the state tournament. Saying goodbye is really hard.”
The Golden Hawk girls picked up two more Top-5 finishes with Jovi Evans took fifth in the 100-meter dash, in 12.96 seconds, and the 200-meter dash, in 25.65 seconds.
The Mid-Prairie distance medley team of Dakota Mitchell, Emma Lueck, Greta Sieren and Hostetler finished fourth, in 4:09.79. Finishing eighth was the 4X100 team of Mitchell, M Hershberger, Lueck and Evans, as well of the 4X800 team of Sieren, Annika Poll, Brooklyn Stutzman and Hostetler.
The Mid-Prairie boys scored seven points, thanks in large part to Landon Sullivan’s fourth-place long jump of 21 feet, 1 inch. Burke Berry finished seventh in the shot put, throwing 51 feet, 11.5 inches.
