Shettler honored at WACO alumni games
Longtime official and coach will retire from WACO this year

WAYLAND — Official and coach Brad Shettler was honored with a varsity letter on Saturday, April 9, for his 29 years of service to the WACO school district. Shettler was given the honor during WACO’s alumni basketball games.
Shettler first became a paid umpire in 1984 while he was living in Belle Plaine, making $10-$15 dollars for doubleheaders. He began officiating at WACO by becoming a line judge in high school volleyball.
Shettler would pick up other gigs in the early 1990s, such as officiating little kids’ basketball and becoming a base umpire for junior high softball. In 2004, he became a certified track and field and cross-country starter.
In the coaching realm, Shettler has been a staple for WACO junior high girls basketball. He became the assistant coach in 1993 and the head coach in 1997. Shettler has been with the junior high program since coming to WACO.
Shettler was the junior high volleyball coach from 1994-2004, and just recently stepping in as junior varsity coach for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. He has been the junior high boys basketball assistant from 1994-2006, and then again from 2017-2019.
In 1997, Shettler became the junior high assistant track coach. One year later, he moved up tot eh head coaching position, and has been at the helm for over 25 years.
Shettler also coached the WACO junior high volleyball team for one season.
