WASHINGTON — The Washington wrestling team knew it had to make up for lost ground in a Southeast Conference home dual against Burlington on Thursday night, but the Demons didn’t quite have enough, falling 37-24.
Washington had to forfeit four weights due to injury and illness, resulting in 18 free Grayhound points and one double forfeit. In matches that saw the mat, the teams split 5-5.
“Everything pretty much had to go right with all those forfeits,” said Washington head coach Brent Van Weelden. “They pretty much had a full lineup.”
Washington had a nice start to the dual. Jude Carter picked up four points in the 132-pound match on a 10-0 major decision, and 138-pounder Lane Schrock won 9-2.
“The first couple matchups went our way,” said Van Weelden. “You can't fault a guy for winning, but we probably needed some bonus points there.”
Washington led 13-9 after a pin by Chase Greiner in the 170-pound match, but Burlington would respond with six-straight wins to take a commanding 37-13 advantage.
Washington freshman Aaron Boone stayed undefeated with a major decision at 113 pounds. Jack Kleese ended the night on a positive note for the Demons when he picked up a pin in the first period of the 126-pound bout.
“Overall it was a pretty competitive dual,” Van Weelden said. “It should have been fun for the fans to watch.”
