CEDAR FALLS - OABCIG is six letters that represent four communities in Western Iowa. Confusing to remember, maybe, but once you get past the name, those six letters represent something else; one of the hottest football programs in the state of Iowa. On Saturday, top-ranked OABCIG will play Sigourney-Koeta in the Class 1A state semifinals.
Odebolt-Aurthur-Battle Creek-Ida Grove Community School District hasn't seen a loss on the football field in over two years. Since falling 58-42 to Southeast Valley in the opening round of the 2018 Class 2A playoffs, the Falcons have won their last 23 game, including a Class 2A state championship in 2019, and every Class 1A game they've played since moving down before the start of the 2020 season.
The Falcons are led by future Hawkeye Cooper DeJean. The dual-threat quarterback is the third-best high school recruit in the state of Iowa, according to 247sports, and the top player at his position. DeJean threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more in last year's state title game, and has accounted for 48 total touchdowns so far in 2020.
DeJean has plenty of help, too. The senior slinger has thrown the ball to nine different receivers this season, and seven of them have scored, including junior Easton Harms, who leads the team with 742 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns, one of five Falcons with over 250 yards through the air.
That's all to say, SK has a more-than-formitable opponent in Saturday's semifinal. The Cobra defense, which gives up just under 12 points per game, will face an offense that averages 50.
If the Cobras can snap OABCIG's 23-game winning streak, SK will put up its 11th ‘W' in a row, and be just one away from finishing off their own state title run.
