ALBIA — A single stroke was the difference between Albia winning its own 18-hole boys golf invitational Tuesday and Fairfield placing second, 342-343.
Fairfield’s Max Weaton had the best score after Knoxville freshman Evan Smith shot 75. Weaton, a sophomore, posted an 81 and freshman teammate Sam Weaton was fourth best with his 83.
Weaton knocked in eight pars in his round with one birdie. He shot 39 on the backside and “scrambled really well,” Fairfield coach Mick Flattery said. “Sam’s approach shots were good.”
Sam Weaton had eight pars and a birdie. Nate Smithburg had a tremendous closing nine holes, shooting a 30 after a 59 on the front. Trojan teammate Jeremy Crile scored a birdie in his round of 90, and Evan Haines carded six pars in his 90. Brad Smithburg shot 91 that included four pars and a birdie.
Fairfield is 8-1 and plays today against EBF.
