Girls wrestling tournaments ramp up around Southeast Iowa

PACKWOOD — Three area squads landed in the Top-5 in Friday night’s Bill Rex Invitational girls wrestling tournament at Pekin. Sigourney-Keota, Pekin and Van Buren Countya ll got a taste of the glory.
Sigourney-Keota narrowly beat out the other two top Union area teams. The Cobras scored 134 points for third. Pekin scored 16.5, to take fourth, and VBC scored 122.5, for fifth.
It was a close team tournament all the way through. Burlington wound up winning the team title by one point, scoring 158. North Mahaska finished with 157, for second.
SK had two champions on the day. Kia Montgomery won at 130, beating out teammate Neveah Beinhart in the first place match, and Sadie Clarahan took the title at 125 pounds, beating Pekin’s Lila Miller in the final.
Pekin had a pair of champions as well. Lexa Nelson went 3-0 to win at 110 pounds. At 145 pounds, Hailey Pedrick rolled to first place, pinning Burlington’s Ednine Saint-Aime in the championship match.
Fairfield had two invididual champions. Samantha Lyons picked up three pins to win the 170-pound bracket, and Kendra Allison had two pins en route to a title at 235.
Washington had a champion as well. Ryha Wellington went 3-0 in the 155-pound bracket, winning the title over Moravia’s Breegan Ellison by major decision.
Mt. Pleasant, Washington and WACO all took part in the Williamsburg Invitational on Monday night. The Panthers and Demons went 23rd and 24th, scoring 25 and 19 points respectively, while WACO finished in a tie for 28th, with zero.
