WAPELLO — A handful of area teams met up in Wapello on Saturday for 59th annual Hillard Howell Invitational. The meet was co-ed for the second time in two years.
Sigourney Keota’s boys’ team led the way for the Union coverage area. SK took fourth overall, scoring 89 points.
The top wrestler on the day for SK was Jake Moore, who took second in the 165-pound weight class. Brady Clark (138), Ashton Schwab (157) and Hunter Sieren (175) all finished third.
Highland was ninth on the boys’ side, finishing with 43 points. The Huskies had just one Top-3 finisher in 126-pounder Luke Guseman, who finished second place.
Mt. Pleasant was 11th overall as a team. The Panthers scored just nine points, all by Ramzy Davis, who ended the meet in fifth place.
On the girls’ side, Highland had the best night of any Union area team, scoring 76 points for eighth place.
The Highland girls had two Top-3 finishers on the day, both in second place. Angelina Rolling took silver at 110 pounds, and Chloe Sexton was runner-up at 190.
Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union finished the tournament in ninth place, scoring 60 points. Quinn Smith finished in third place at 130 pounds for the Wildcats, and Josie Nelson was third place at 140.
WACO’s Rylee Rice finished third place at the invite. The Warriors’ 110-pounder scored 17 of the team’s 35 points, which put WACO in 4th place.
Sigourney-Keota had the only winner of the day, and that came on the girls’ side, as Reanah Utterback continued to tear up competition early in the year by winning the 115-pound bracket.
Utterback, who is a two-time state qualifier on the boys’ side, finished the tournament with three wins. Two of those were by pinfall, and one was a 17-0 technical fall.
Mt. Pleasant finished 21st on the night. The Pantehrs failed to score any points.
