Things are getting real for the Sigourney-Keota Savage Cobras.
SK moved up yet another spot in both the Cedar Rapids Gazette and Associated Press football polls after their biggest win of the season so far. The Cobras got their revenge on Mediapolis for as eason-ending loss in 2019 by blasting the Bulldogs 31-14.
Meanwhile, previously third-ranked Underwood was losing their first game of the year, a 49-22 clubbing at the hands of No. 1 OABCIG. That helped SK move up into the third spot in both polls less than one week before the postseason brackets are revealed.
Washington had no such luck in Class 3A, despite beating down Burlington 69-0. Cedar Rapids Xavier, Dallas Center-Grimes, Council Bluffs Lewis Central and Harlan all won, keeping the Demons at No. 5 in the class with one more regular season game to go. The Demons did get two first-place votes in the AP poll.
The only other team receiving votes in the Union Coverage area is New London. The Tigers received one vote in the Class 8-Man AP poll this week. The 8-Man ranks have remained relatively steady with top teams continuing to win throughout the year.
There was one major change in The Gazette poll. Xavier's impressive 44-20 win over Grinnell helped the Saints jump into the top spot in Class 3A, leapfrogging DC-G, who had to grind to beat ADM 16-14. Xavier was already the No. 1 team in the AP poll.
The Class 2A rankings continue to be the most competitive. Prairie City Monroe remains the No. 1 team in The Gazette 2A rankings, but there was a change in the AP. Inwood West Lyon's 26-12 win over Sioux Center helped them rise above Williamsburg. PCM is ranked third in the AP poll.
This will be the second-to-last poll of the 2020 football season, as the playoff pods will be revealed sometime over the weekend after the regular season finishes up on Friday night.
