FORT MADISON — Things were not going right for Washington early in its 3A Region 6 opener against Fort Madison on Monday night.
A slow start by the Demons was too much to overcome as Fort Madison took the postseason victory 72-50.
Through the first few minutes, the two Southeast Conference rivals were neck-and-neck.
A three ball from Logan McDole and a two from Kael Williams helped the Demons score five quick points, but those were their first and last buckets of the opening period.
After the game was knotted at 5-5, Fort Madison rattled off 16 straight points to the end of the quarter.
Heading into the second, Washington found itself down 21-5.
Despite the deficit, the Demons continued to battle.
To open the second frame, the Demons outscored the Bloodhounds 11-8 through nearly four and a half minutes. All 11 points came from McDole.
However, Washington couldn’t gain any ground as Fort Madison ended on a 7-4 run to make it 15-15 in quarter scoring.
The Demons were down 36-20 at halftime. The Bloodhounds excelled at using the inside out game through the third half as a successful inside game led to outside opportunities that they didn’t miss.
“I think when your outsized you got to try to take it best you can,” Washington head coach Collin said. “We wanted to try and make it difficult inside. They were hitting. Credit to them for being ready to play. It didn’t seem like we quite had the sync offensively.”
Fort Madison only extended its lead out of the half as a 13-2 swing pushed the Bloodhounds advantage to 49-22.
Washington gave up just one more field goal the rest of the quarter and finished on a 13-6 run, but the deficit still sat at 20, 55-35 after three.
To the Demons discouragement, they just couldn’t gain any momentum in the final period as Fort Madison won the quarter 17-15 to seal it.
“This group has grit,” Stark said. “I thought we competed up until the very end. Credit to our seniors for leading this group throughout the year. We always finished until the end.”
McDole led the Demons with 23 points in his final game. Rajan Roth followed with 10.
Washington ends its season at 9-14.
The Demons lose seven seniors, which includes McDole, Conner Leyden, Cole Vetter, Luke Schiebel, Seth Shepherd, Oliver Hobscheidt and Colby Mullens.
