The Union area had a handful of games take place early this week on the baseball field. Here is how the Union’s small school teams fared.
Monday, June 16
Mid-Prairie 4, Wilton 1
Brady Weber hurled a gem on the pitcher’s mound, striking out 10 Wilton batters in a complete game to help earn the Golden Hawks a River Valley South win.
Conner Wiles had a double and two RBIs to lead the Mid-Prairie offense.
Mid-Prairie 5, Wilton 0
Mid-Prairie got another quality start, this time of out Brooks Weber in Game 2. He threw four shutout innings, and Kale Miller threw three, with the two pitchers combining for eight strikeouts.
Tatem Teller had a strong performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
Mediapolis 11, Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus 1
The Wolves had a rough night at Mediapolis in Southeast Iowa Super Conference crossover play. Jaxton Jones had the team’s only RBI.
Notre Dame 14, Highland 1
The Huskies were done in by a talented Notre Dame squad in an SEISC crossover game.
Landon Roling knocked in Logan McFarland for the opening run in the first inning, but Notre Dame responded with the next 14 runs.
New London 5, Hillcrest Academy 4
New London walked off Hillcrest Academy in a SEISC crossover game.
Tate Welcher went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to lead New London. Kye Reighard had three hits of his own, including a double and an RBI.
For the Ravens, Liam Schrock had the team’s only RBI, going 1-for-2 with a triple and one run batted in.
Cardinal 11, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 1
Drake Durflinger went off in Eddyville, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and five RBIs. Bode Ferrell was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and both Treyton Hafele and Casyn Epperson knocked in two runs.
Matthew Blomme through a gem on the mound, giving up just one hit and one unearned run over five innings of work. He struck out five Rockets.
Cardinal 5, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 0
In a game that stayed 0-0 until the sixth inning, Cardinal pushed five runs across in its final two at-bats.
Kazin Miller went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs at the plate. Cody Birlson was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and the duo of Weston Oleary and Cayden Courtney combined for a two-hitter on the mound.
Belle Plaine 6, Keota 5
Belle Plaine scored four runs in the top of the seventh to steal a South Iowa Cedar League win in Keota.
Despite the loss, Brennan McGuire went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Chase Haifley was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Blake Baker had two hits and an RBI, and Ashton Galindo finished with two hits.
Tuesday, June 17
Hillcrest Academy 2, Pekin 0
Hillcrest’s Phoenix Anderson no-hit Pekin in a shortened five-inning game, as the Ravens drowned out the Panthers on the road.
Liam Schrock was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI in the win for Hillcrest Academy.
New London 6, Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus 4
A Henry County battle was won in comeback form, as New London rallied from down 4-0 to knock off the Wolves.
Gavin Strawhacker had a triple and three RBIs in the win for New London, while Memphis Watson had one hit and two RBIs.
For Columbus/WMU, Riley Kaalberg went yard in the game and finished 1-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs.
