Small school boys basketball roundup: Highland gets 1st win

Highland’s first win of the year highlighted a busy weekend in area boys basketball.
Highland 40, English Valleys 30 (Thursday)
The Huskies used a strong second half to pull off their first win of the season in a nonconference road game.
Highland led just 17-16 at halftime, but the Huskies outscored the Bears 23-14 in the second half.
Logan Bonebrake had a big day for the Huskies, leading the team with 13 points, 9 rebounds and three assists. Nicolas Oriano had nine points. Bryce Hazelett scored six, and Logan McFarland had six steals.
Mid-Prairie 57, Camanche 55
Mid-Priairie finished a season sweep of Camanche with a 57-55 road win. The Golden Hawks beat the Storm by five earlier this year.
After trailing 13-11 at the end of the first quarter, Mid-Prairie took a 26-20 lead before halftime and stretched it to 43-30 after three. Camanche stormed back at the end of the game, but the Golden Hawks clung on for the win.
Camron Pickard went off for 29 points on the day, including five 3-pointers. Alex Bean scored 10 points, and Shawn Dobbs finished with eight.
Keota 62, HLV 41
Keota won its 10th game of the year, a 21-point home win over HLV.
The Eagles led by just seven points after three quarters, holding a 35-28 advantage, but a 27-point fourth helped put the game on ice.
Sawyer Stout sank six 3-pointers and scored 34 points to lead Keota to victory. Cole Kindred scored 14 points and dished out five assists, and Billie Kindred finished the night with nine points and eight rebounds.
Clarke 87, Cardinal 16
It was a tough night for Cardinal as they traveled west to take on a tough Clarke team in Osceola.
Clarke led from start to finish, building a 52-11 halftime lead and winning the second half 35-5.
New London 78, Notre Dame 63
New London handed the Nikes their second loss in conference play, which brought the Tigers up to a tie for second place. It was all New London all day in a big Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division showdown.
Blaise Porter had a monster day, scoring 39 points and also leading the team with 12 rebounds. Leo Gebauer scored 12 points. Brendan Richey had 11.
Mediapolis 63, Van Buren County 58
Van Buren County took the Bulldogs down to the wire, but couldn’t pull it out, suffering a SEISC South Division loss.
No. 4 (1A) WACO 68, Pekin 36
Pekin kept it close through one quarter, as WACO went into the second with a 9-5 lead, but the Warriors dominated from that point on.
Hunter Hughes had 22 points to lead WACO. Isaac Oswald scored 11. Cody Graber had 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
Pekin 56, Sigourney 49 (Saturday)
The Panthers rallied back from a 16-6 deficit to stun Sigourney at the Backyard Brawl. The Panthers were down by one point going into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Savages 24-16 in the final eight minutes.
It was the eighth win for Pekin in the last nine games between the two rivals.
Winfield-Mount Union 58, Lone Tree 23
The Wolves rolled the Lions in SEISC North action, leading 33-13 at halftime and 52-15 after three quarters.
Cam Buffington scored 17 points in the win. Jake Edwards had 14 points, and Abram Edwards filled the stat sheet with 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
Winfield-Mount Union 71, Holy Trinity 55 (Saturday)
The Wolves continued their run on Saturday, as Cam Buffington exploded for 38 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Holy Trinity.
Gabriel Hemsworth added eight points for the Wolves. Abram Edwards finished with seven points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Hillcrest Academy 65, Columbus 20
The Ravens were on fire in a SEISC South home win over Columbus, leading 40-13 at halftime and 52-19 after three periods.
Seth Our scored 17 points for the Ravens. Grant Bender added 16.
Danville 61, Hillcrest Academy 51 (Saturday)
It was a tough one for the Ravens in a SEISC crossover game. Danville opened up a 40-30 lead at halftime and the Ravens’ offense couldn’t muster enough to stage a comeback.
Bender scored 16 points in the loss. Luke Schrock had 13, and Ours finished with 12.
