This week in small school football, a red-hot Pekin team travels to previously ranked Columbus. No. 10 Sigourney-Keota goes to Cardinal, and second-ranked Winfield-Mount Union play a road game on Saturday.
Pekin (3-0) at Columbus (1-2)
In one of the most intriguing games in the Union coverage area this season, Pekin puts its unbeaten record up against previously-ranked Columbus.
The Panthers have impressed by a dominant start to the season, but they’ll travel to take on a Wildcat team that nearly knocked off juggernaut Lisbon last week.
Pekin quarterback Will Adam has thrown for 530 yards and five scores so far this season. He has also run for 156 yards and three scores. Sven Dahlstron has six total touchdowns, five of which came on the ground.
Columbus’ Kaden Amigon has run for 610 yards and eight touchdown this year. Tyson Kaalberg has 17 tackles and two interceptions on the defensive side of the ball.
Note: New London will not play this week, after having to cancel their home game against Central City.
No. 10 (1A) Sigourney-Keota (2-1) at Cardinal (0-3)
The Cobras are back in the Class 1A rankings, thanks in part to wins over Mediapolis and Mid-Prairie in each of the last two weeks.
Kale Clarahan has led the SK offense with 359 yards and five touchdowns on the ground this year. Quarterback Sawyer Stout has rushed for 169 yards and a score.
Cardinal nearly picked up their first win last week, falling by 11 against Davis County. Quarterback Alec Rachford has rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown so far this year to lead a struggling Comet offense.
West Burlington (2-1) at Mid-Prairie (0-3)
The Golden Hawks look for their first win against a West Burlington squad that comes into the game having won two games. In both of West Burlington’s wins, the Falcons have put up over 45 points.
Mid-Prairie is coming off a near stunner against No. 10 (1A) Sigourney-Keota, where they fell 41-35.
Mid-Prairie has had a brutal schedule early on. The Golden Hawks hope quarterback Brady Weber (413 passing yards, 5 TDs) and running back Hudson Ehrenfelt (239 yards) can lead them to victory.
The Golden Hawks will have to deal with West Burlington quarterback Caden Schwentker, who has already passed for 334 yards and three scores, and rushed for 249 yards and a trio of touchdowns.
HLV (0-4) at WACO (2-1)
WACO looks to get back in the winner’s column after a tough loss at Winfield-Mount Union. The Warriors now sit just outside of The Gazette’s Class 8-Player Top-10 poll.
WACO quarterback Clayton Miller has combined for nearly 500 all purpose yards this year, as well as eight touchdowns on offense. Louden Huisenga has been a star so far, scoring seven total touchdowns.
HLV nearly got their first win last week after three-straight blowouts to start the year. Max Henstorf has thrown for 170 yards and two scores, and rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown, while freshman Cael Weisskopf has nearly 300 all-purpose yards and three scores.
No. 2 (8-Player) Winfield-Mount Union (3-0) at Montezuma (3-1) (Saturday)
It’s another tough test for the second-ranked Wolves, as WMU hits the road to take on a Montezuma team that picked up one vote in The Gazette’s Class 8-Player football poll last week.
WMU running back Cam Buffington has asserted his usual dominance on opposing teams, combining for over 600 yards and 11 touchdowns of total offense. Jake Edwards has already thrown for over 500 yards and seven scores in his first year under center.
Montezuma’s Brady Boulton is a ‘Mr. Everything’ type player himself. The sophomore has thrown for 727 yards and 17 touchdowns, and has rushed for 290 yards and five scores.
Wapello (1-2) at Van Buren County (1-2)
The Warriors host the Indians on homecoming one week after scooping up their first win over Highland in thrilling fashion.
Van Buren County’s Izaak Loeffler has thrown for 410 yards and five scores, and rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown this year. Lucas Fett has caught 13 passes for 220 yards and five touchdowns.
Highland (0-3) at (class A) No. 10 Lisbon (3-0)
The Huskies look to pull a stunner at 10th-ranked Lisbon after nearly beating Van Buren County last week.
Highland’s Sage Hartley-Norman has thrown for 249 yards and two touchdowns and run for 179 yards this season. Ayden Havel has 11 catches for 209 yards and two scores.
The Huskies will try to slow down Lisbon quarterback Dakota Clark, who has thrown for 334 yards and four touchdowns, along with rushing for 206 yards and three scores.
