The Friday night lights will be shining and area teams hope to be headlining from their efforts.
Mid-Prairie will host Iowa City Regina, the second or third ranked team in Class A, depending on the poll. Regina suffered a 45-13 loss last week, but it was to Class 4A Pleasant Valley.
Regina quarterback Ashton Cook was 21-of-33 for 246 yards and two touchdowns with Alec Wick catching 10 passes for 162 yards and two TDs. Theo Kolie ran 17 times for 73 yards.
In a 27-21 loss to Sigourney-Keota, Mid-Prairie's Vinny Bowlin was 14-for-235 for 238 yards passing and a score. Kayden Reinier rumbled for 134 yards rushing on 22 carries. Keegan Gingerich had six receptions for 118 yards. Justice Jones had 8.5 tackles.
Cardinal will be playing their second-straight road game after dropping a 14-7 game to Southwest Valley in Week 1. The Comets enter their Week 2 matchup at 1-1, as they dominated a Week 0 game against Columbus. Maddux Jones enters the game with 452 passing years and three touchdowns this season, along with three rushing touchdowns, and Griffin Greiner has 240 yards receiving and three scores.
The Comets will take on a Falcon team who got smashed by Central Decatur last week. Wayne lost their season opener 42-6. This will be Wayne's home opener.
Pekin has Belle Plaine coming to Tom Stone Field. The Plainsmen lost 20-0 to Lisbon, ranked eighth in Class A. Pekin defeated Central Lee, 37-31.
Sigourney-Keota hosts Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont after downing Mid-Prairie. EBF lost to Pleasantville 34-12. Cade Molyneux was 5-of-5 for 32 yards and a score and ran 17 times for 93 yards in the Cobras' win.
Van Buren County will be playing its first game of the year after having Week 1 off. The Warriors will host a Central Lee team that is coming off a thrilling game against Pekin, but a 37-31 loss.
Winfield-Mt. Union and Montezuma will face off in the battle of 1-0 teams. The Wolves smothered Tri-County last week 44-8 and Montezuma edged Kingsley-Pierson 39-38.
The Wolves are coming off a big game from running back Noah Sparrow, who ran for 184 yards and two touchdowns. W-MU didn't throw the ball once in their Week 1 win.
Montezuma quarterback Eddie Bugess have a monster game, throwing for 307 yards and three touchdowns, and running for 109 yards and three scores.
