It was a busy weekend in small school football, and a handful of area teams came out on the other side of it with victories.
Columbus and Sigourney-Keota were big winners in Union area battles, and second-ranked Winfield-Mount Union put up a 70 spot on a tough Montezuma team.
Columbus 56 Pekin 24
Pekin’s undefeated start came to a halt at fellow Union area competitor Columbus.
The Wildcats scored 35 points in the first quarter to put a stamp on the game early. Pekin could never recover, as the Wildcats led 49-8 at half and 56-16 after three.
Kaden Amigon went for 164 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Amigon broke Columbus’ all-time rushing record, as he now totals 4,326 in total career yards.
Riley Kaalberg scampered for 123 yards and three scores, and Tyson Kaalberg had two interceptions.
Pekin’s Will Adam ran for 89 yards and a score, and also threw for 139 yards and a touchdown. Robert Brown racked up 90 yards and a touchdown receiving, and also found the end zone on the ground.
No. 10 (1A) Sigourney-Keota 67 Cardinal 0
It was all Sigourney-Keota in a clash in Eldon, as the Cobras put up 35 first quarter points and never looked back.
Kale Clarahan ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns for the Cobras. Cole Kindred went for 75 yards and three scores. In total, six different SK players rushed for a touchdown, and Sawyer Stout also found Kindred for a 60-yard passing score.
WACO 59 HLV 12
WACO rolled over HLV, leading 46-0 at halftime and 53-0 after three quarters. The entire second half was played with a running clock.
Louden Huisenga ran for 79 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Clayton Miller threw for a touchdown and ran for one. John McClaughlin scored twice on the ground. Reece Oswald scored once, and Isaac Rich caught a 45-yard touchdown pass.
No. 2 (8-Player) Winfield-Mount Union 70 Montezuma 20 (Saturday)
The second-ranked Wolves absolutely dominated a quality Montezuma team on the road.
Cam Buffington had another monster game, catching eight passes for 246 yards and four touchdowns, and also rushing for 139 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Jake Edwards threw for a cool 300 yards and four scores. Cole Milks rushed for two touchdowns, and Abram Edwards scored twice.
Mid-Prairie 40 West Burlington 18
The Golden Hawks picked up their first win under new head coach Daren Lambert, and they did it in impressive fashion.
Running back Hudson Ehrenfelt rumbled for 183 yards and five touchdowns on the ground to lead the way for Mid-Prairie.
Quarterback Brady Weber slung the ball around for 201 yards and a score. Cobi Hershberger caught seven passes for 88 yards, and Dylan Henry caught one pass for a 47-yard touchdown.
Van Buren County 40 Wapello 36
Izaak Loeffler scored the game-winning touchdown with just 11 seconds left as Van Buren County scooped up its second-straight win with a home defeat of Wapello.
Van Buren County is now 2-2 after losing its first two games of the season. Both wins have come by four points.
No. 10 (A) Lisbon 57 Highland 6
The Huskies couldn’t contain a fantastic Lisbon team, as the Lions scored 47 points in the first quarter of a route.
Highland outscored Lisbon 6-3 in the second half, but by that time, the damage had already been done.
