Small school teams start district play

The Union area football teams had two teams fall from the unbeaten ranks last Friday when defending state 8-man champion New London lost in its second overtime game in as many weeks and Highland fell in its Homecoming.
New London (3-1, 1-1) enters the third week of its district slate with a game at HLV (3-1, 2-0). Shae Summerfield has 824 yards rushing for the Tigers on 76 attempts for an average of almost 11 yards a carry. New London leads the district in rushing by 337 yards over Iowa Valley.
Highland will try to recover from its loss to Lisbon with the first game of the district schedule. Highland travels to Brooklyn to play BGM (4-0). The Huskies need to avenge last year's 31-22 home loss to BGM. Mason McFarland is third in Class A District 6 in receiving yards with 215 on just nine catches, an average of 23.9 per reception.
Unbeaten Sigourney-Keota hosts Wilton (1-3). The Beavers have given up over 40 points in its last two games. SK has scored over 53 in three of its wins. JD Stout of SK leads Class 1A in rushing with 799 yards on 63 attempts.
Unbeaten Cardinal starts Class A District 6 play at Pekin, which got its first win last week. The Comets were also unbeaten last year when Pekin came to Eldon, but lost 53-0 to the Panthers. Cardinal's Blaine Bryant leads the district with three interceptions and Jarrett Greiner leads with four fumble recoveries. Pekin's Keenan Winn is third in the district with 28.5 total tackles.
Mid-Prairie (2-2) starts Class 2A district play with a home game against Central Lee (0-4). The Golden Hawks average 27.25 points a game and yield 21.5. CL gives up an average of 45 points a game and have scored 27 total. The Hawks' Josh Wallington leads 2A District 6 in solo tackles for loss with six.
WACO (1-3, 0-2) hosts Iowa Valley (3-1, 1-1). The Warriors have scored at least 48 points in each of their games, winning by 10 points and losing by seven, six and five points. WACO's Nik Coble is second in 8-4 in total offense rushing and passing with 1,301 yards. Braden Hammond is second in the district with 48.5 total tackles.
Columbus (1-4) and Van Buren (0-4) square off in Columbus Junction. Bryan Miranda of Columbus leads 1A-5 in solo tackles for loss with five. Van Buren's Tony Davison is fourth in the district with 139 receiving yards on 13 catches.
Winfield-Mt. Union (1-3, 0-2) travels to English Valleys, who suffered its first loss last week. Juanito Piper of W-MU leads district 8-4 in solo tackles with 49.
