The Union area small schools learned at least part of their postseason Saturday morning. While many of the local squads saw their season come to an end in the regular season, six will be in playoff action on Friday night.
Three area teams will be hosting first round games, including district champions WACO and Sigourney-Keota. The Warriors and Cobras will start their playoff runs in the same spot as last season, right on their own home turf.
In Class 8-Player, District 6 champion WACO welcomes in Martensdale-St. Mary’s, a team coming off a third-place finish in District 8. The second-ranked Warriors are the only local 8-Player team to start at home, as New London travels to No. 6 Gladbrook-Reinbeck and Winfield-Mount Union goes up to No. 3 Don Bosco.
New London’s destination is a similar one. The Tigers’ 2018 state championship run started with a road playoff game at Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
Class 1A District 6 champion Sigourney-Keota will host Sumner-Fredericksburg, a fourth-place team in District 4.
Columbus finished second in Class A District 5, and that was enough to earn the Wildcats a home game against Maquoketa Valley, the third place team from District 4.
After finishing third in Class 2A District 6, Mid-Prairie will be taking a road trip. The Golden Hawks get a psuedo-familiar face with River Valley foe Northeast, which finished second in District 5. Mid-Prairie and Northeast did not play in the regular season, and haven’t in the high school careers of any of the current players.
Winners of next Friday’s playoff games will advance to the quarterfinals. Classes 3A, 4A and 5A will begin their playoffs in the quarters next week, putting everyone on the same track.
