DES MOINES — Over the course of the last three years, Washington’s Lance Sobaski has only gotten better on the track.
She showed his improvement at the Drake Relays, qualifying in three total events. It was the most for the Demons tied with teammate Elijah Morris.
Sobaski competed in the 800-meter, 1600-meter and distance medley.
“It means the world,” Sobaski said of making it back to Drake. “My teammates and I’s goal was to go out and perform and get the race we wanted. We went and showed out. The rest it just fun. It’s bonus. We’re focused on conference right now. As a senior, to be able to do this again is amazing.”
With the fifth fastest time in the state coming into the meet, 3:34.58, the Demons distance medley did not falter.
Ethan Patterson, Jacob Miller, Morris and Sobaski top their best time by three seconds, 3:31.49, for fourth place in the event.
It was a stellar performance for the squad compared to last year. The group came into 2021’s Drake Relays with the eighth fastest time in the state, but finished 17th in the event.
Last year, the four finished seventh in the state meet. This time around, they will be contenders once again.
In the 800-meter, Sobaski had the 17th best time in the state before the race on Friday, 1:58.26. Sobaski finished right around that on Friday, capturing a 15th-place finish, with a time of 1:59.50.
Sobaski also finished 15th in the 1600-meter, with a time of 4:29.62. He led for the first 800-meters, but the others started to kick it into gear after that. Sobaski came in with the 16th best time around the state.
“In the 800, I didn’t get out hard enough because I had the d-med 800 before that,” Sobaski said. “Today we were talking, like we didn’t get out hard enough. I was like expecting someone to be on the cones at the cut mark, then I looked at the jumbotron. I was kinda perplexed. I was like oh shoot that's too fast.”
With the state meet right around the corner, Sobaski will be in the running in a slew of events.
Last season, Sobaski competed in the 800-meter, 1600-meter and the 3200-meter in the state meet.
