Softball roundup: Demons go 2-1 in weekend tournament
It was another packed weekend of softball for the Union area coverage teams. Among the weekend action was a 2-1 performance from Washington at the Creston tournament, a thrilling one-run win for Columbus and a perfect weekend from Highland.
Washington snags 2 wins
CRESTON — Washington took a journey to the west side of the state for softball games last week.
Friday at Creston High School, the Demons dropped an 8-1 decision to an Atlantic team with an 13-1 record. Saturday at Southwestern Community College, Washington eked out a 1-0 win against Bondurant-Farrar (11-7). Washington capped the week with a 13-3 five-inning win over Central Decatur (5-7) with a seven-run first inning.
Kellie Dallmeyer sparked the victory with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate that included a home run and a triple. Ella Greiner connected on two triples while Haley Mitchell and Elyse Hunt each had a double. Dallmeyer and Ava Turner were responsible for three runs batted in apiece. Isabella Salazar walked six with six hits in the win.
Halle Cuddeback went seven innings without walking a batter, struck out two and scattered seven hits for the shutout Demon win. Emmy Wenger had two of the Demons four hits and scored the game’s only run in the second inning.
Elyse Hunt had three of the Demons seven hits in the loss.
Mt. Pleasant drops pair
MT. PLEASANT — The Panthers lost two games to No. 4 (3A) West Burlington. The Falcons beat Mt. Pleasant 12-0 and 15-0 in a nonconference doubleheader on Saturday.
The Panthers were no hit by West Burlington ace Lauren Summers in a three-inning Game 1. In Game 2, Savana Walls had Mt. Pleasant’s only hit, going 1-for-2.
Mid-Prairie downed at home
WELLMAN — A slow start to the Mid-Prairie offense led to a 7-3 loss at the hands of visiting Solon on Friday.
The Spartans scored the first five runs of the game and Mid-Prairie never led.
Brenna Jehle led Mid-Prairie at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a couple of singles. Hannah Sellers, Katelyn Schneider and Landry Pacha all collected a hit.
Keota loses lead
BROOKLYN — Keota scored the first three runs of the ballgame, leading 3-0 after the top of the third, but BGM came roaring back to hand the Eagles a 16-6 loss in six innings on Friday.
Macie McDonald went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in the loss. Makenzie Jackson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Van Buren stays hot
KEOSAUQUA — Van Buren County took time off from winning the Fairfield tournament to put up double digits on Lone Tree in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference crossover game on Friday night. The Warriors pulled away with eight late runs to win 12-4.
Ivy Davidson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the win. Bree Kirkhart went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Annabell Cormier was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, and both Isabel Manning and Chelsey Huff recorded three-hit days.
Columbus holds off HTC
COLUMBUS — Despite six early runs, Columbus had to cling on tight to beat Holy Trinity 9-8 on Friday. The Wildcats scored the eventual winning run in the sixth after HTC tied it in the top half of the inning.
Brooke Mulder was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run two RBIs to lead Columbus. Mary Hellige was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Laure Mehmert knocked in a pair as well.
Highland dominates tourney
CALAMUS — Highland cruised to victory in the Calamus-Wheatland tournament, going 3-0 on Saturday. Highland beat Northeast 6-4, creamed Midland 10-1 and bounced Camanche 9-0.
Jenna Sands led the team against Northeast, going 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs. Payton Brun went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs against Midland. Sarah Burton stuffed the stat sheet against Camanche, going 3-for-4 with a double, four runs and three stolen bases.
Mid-Prairie splits in EBF tournament
EDDYVILLE — The Golden Hawks went 1-1 at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on Saturday, falling 10-4 to PCM before beating Centerville 13-4.
Madeline Schrader dominated in the Golden Hawks’ win over Centerville, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and five RBIs. Myah Lugar was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Katelyn Schneider and Dakota Mitchell each knocked in two runs, and Landry Pacha went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Grace Batcheller picked up two wins on the day, taking the pitcher’s circle against Northeast and Camanche. Jessica Kraus pitched against Mid-Prairie.
Columbus toppled in Muscatine
MUSCATINE — It was one and done for the Wildcats in the Muscatine tournament on Saturday. Columbus fell 9-2 against Cedar Rapids Prairie.
Lily Coli went 3-for-3 with a triple, a double and an RBI to lead Columbus in the loss. Jobie Lekwa knocked in the other Wildcat run.
