Softball roundup: No. 13 Van Buren County loses defensive battle

KEOSAUQUA — The ranking in Class 2A may have been a curse for the No. 13 Van Buren County softball team. The Warriors lost a Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division home game to Central Lee 2-1 Tuesday. It was the second consecutive game the Warriors scored a single run, but a Chelsey Huff no-hitter made the other a win.
Huff recorded no walks, seven strikeouts, but nine hits in the loss. Cala Smith batted in the only Warrior run with a double. Tessa Sayer was 2-for-3 with a double.
VBC is 17-5 overall, 4-3 South while Central Lee is 12-6, 7-2.
New London drops slugfest
FORT MADISON — Runs were flowing at Holy Trinity (5-9, 4-6) where the visiting New London Tigers (4-20, 0-9) fell 10-8 in the South game Tuesday.
Marah Hartrick stung a home run, batting in three run for the Tigers. Ashlyn McSorley was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs and Natalie Burden went 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
Pekin sweeps Wildcats
PACKWOOD — Columbus (9-14, 6-7) lost two North Division softball games to Pekin (6-13, 5-6) Monday, 11-7 and 8-4.
Pekin’s Kerrigan Pope hit a home run in the second game and Kendyl Noel had a double and a single. Allison Bainbridge was 4-of-5 in the first game, when Columbus had nine errors. In the win, Brooke Miller did not issue a walk with six strikeouts and eight hits. The pitcher in the Game 2 win was Gracie Coble with five hits and a walk.
Only two Pekin runs were earned on losing pitcher Libby Coil. Libby White took the loss in the second game. The leading hitter in the first game was Coil producing a single, double and triple. Emma Milder, Lela Fort, and Jocelyn Fulton were all 2-for-4.
In the second game, Fulton cracked a two-run home run. Michelle Diaz was 2-for-3. Milder had two singles and a double.
