There were six small school softball games for the Union area on Monday. In the marquee game of the night, Winfield-Mount Union was narrowly defeated in a battle of ranked teams. Columbus and Cardinal each picked up two wins, and Pekin flew past New London.
WMU edged in ranked battle
WINFIELD — It was an absolute battle as No. 15 (1A) Winfield-Mount Union hosted No. 3 (2A) Louisa-Muscatine in a showdown of Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division powers. The Wolves fell in a 6-5 nail-biter.
WMU led 2-1 after the first inning and 4-1 after the third. Louisa-Muscatine tied it at 4-4 in the fifth, but the Wolves scored one in the fifth on a Molly Miller home run. Louisa-Muscatine answered with two in the sixth, and WMU stranded two runners in its final at-bat.
Miller finished the game 2-for-3 with a homer and an RBI. Jobey Malone went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Carlee Sloan and Madie Anderson each had two hits.
Anderson threw all seven innings in the circle, giving up six runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks, while striking out 10 batters.
Pekin enacts revenge
PACKWOOD — Two days after falling to New London in the Fairfield tournament, Pekin got some payback with an 8-1 home victory over the Tigers.
Pekin scored all eight runs in the first five innings. New London’s Marah Hartrick knocked in a run in the seventh to stop the shutout.
Columbus sweeps Lone Tree.
LONE TREE — Columbus used a strong night in the pitcher’s circle to roll past Lone Tree, winning 5-0 and 6-2.
Columbus eighth-grader Lily Coil pitched a one-hitter in Game 1. She struck out 11 batters over seven innings and had a triple and an RBI at the plate. Michelle Diaz was 2-for-4 with a double with two RBIs.

Keota gets walked off
COLFAX — Keota nearly had its first win of the season, but the Eagles couldn’t quite nip Colfax-Mingo, falling 3-2 in 10 innings.
Keota had a 2-1 lead heading in to the bottom of the seventh inning. Colfax-Mingo tied the game up with a run in the seventh and won the game in extra innings with a two-out run in the 10th.
